One More Year
Tame Impala Lyrics

(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)
(One more year)

Do you remember? We were standing here a year ago
Our minds were racin', time went slow
If there was trouble in the world, we didn't know
If we had a care, it didn't show

But now I worry our horizons bear nothing new
'Cause I get this feeling and maybe you get it too
We're on a roller coaster stuck on its loop-de-loop
'Cause what we did, one day on a whim, will slowly become all we do

I never wanted any other way to spend our lives
I know we promised we'd be doing this 'til we die
And now I fear we might
Oh, now I fear we might

But it's okay
I think there's a way
Why don't we just say, "One more year"?
(One more year)
Not worrying if I get the right amount of sleep
(One more year)
Not caring if we do the same thing every week
(One more year)
Of living like I'm only living for me
(One more year)
Of never talking about where we're gonna be
(One more year)
One more year
Of living like the free spirit I wanna be

We got a whole year
(One more year) fifty-two weeks, seven days each
(One more year) four seasons, one reason
One way, one year
(One more year) one year, one year
From today
From today
Day
Day

I never wanted any other way to spend our lives
Now one of these is gonna be the last for all time
For all time
One more year

(One more year)

Overall Meaning

The song "One More Year" by Tame Impala is all about the thought that keeps popping in one's head as they grow older, which is whether they are constantly doing the same thing every day without any change. The lyrics start with the lines "Do you remember? We were standing here a year ago." The lead singer reminisces about the time when everything was better. At that moment, their minds were racing and time was going slow. They didn't care about anything in the world, and no trouble hindered them. But now, they fear that their horizons bear nothing new, and they just live every day like it's the last. The song is all about capturing those happy moments in life and holding on to them.

As the song progresses, the lead singer talks about how they never wanted to spend their lives doing anything else. They affirmed that they'd be doing what they were doing until they die, but now, they fear that they might not do it. Thus, the chorus begins with "But it's okay" and ends with "One more year." The lead singer is asking their partner to give them one more year of living their life like the free spirit they always wanted to be. They just want to live like they're the only ones that matter, and this is the only thing they care about, without worrying about anything.

Has slowly become all we do

[Chorus]
I never wanted any other way to spend our lives
I know we promised we'd be doing this 'til we die
And now I fear we might
Ooh, now I fear we might

[Post-Chorus]
But it's okay

Why don't we just say, "One more year"? (One more year)
Not worryin' if I get the right amount of sleep (One more year)
Not carin' if we do the same thing every week (One more year)
Of livin' like I'm only livin' for me (One more year)
Of never talkin' about where we're gonna be (One more year)

Do you remember, we were standing here a year ago
Our minds were racing and time went slow
If there was trouble in the world, we didn't know
If we had a care, it didn't show
But now I worry our horizon's been nothing new
'Cause I get this feeling and maybe you get it too
We're on a rollercoaster stuck on its loop-de-loop
'Cause what we did, one day, on a whim
Slowly becomes all we do

I never wanted any other way to spend our lives
I know we promised we'd be doing this 'til we die
So now I feel we might
Ooh, now I feel we might

But it's okay
I think there's a way
Why don't we just say, "One more year"? (One more year)

Now all my days is gonna be the last for a time
For a time
One more year

It's weird how every single Tame Impala song I hear has a delayed reaction where I'm just like "Ok, whatever" and it doesn't really hit me at all but then by the 3rd listen I like it better than anything by any other artist and can't imagine what life would be like withoutit

so true!!

@fredhuggins921

I don't what it is but I've had this reaction to so many Tame Impala songs and it's only his music I swear. It's like he knows that you won't understand it the first time, but once you get it you get it.

On the Spotify storyline, kevin says he imagines listening to this song at the beach in a windy night, and that’s what I did this night. It marks exactly one year since my grandmother passed away. And the part “do you remember we were standing here a year ago?” really hits me, I remember exactly a year ago standing here and crying so much.

if you like tame impala you should check out Lonely Gimmick - Grumpy Days, it gives me early tame impala vibes and is a great new indie track

@aldrickchavez9695

Great story, so glad you shared! My condolences to you about your Grandmother, but glad that you also appreciated this song like I do!! Masterpiece and makes you think deeply and beautifully, cheers!😊
