There was a bet between TD´s American promoter and the band in a small Sushi restaurant in Los Angeles during TD´s performance on the West Coast end of 2008. The Promoter just joked around by asking how it would sound like if TD would record all time top 40 stuff. After a big laugh, everybody thought about the´impossible´project. What a surreal idea if TD could do a most modern cover version of songs lots of people know, love and would have chosen as their own soundtrack for various parts of their life. ´If you do it I´ve got a good offer, if you fail, all of you have to ride the distance LA - Las Vegas by bike – so it´s a bet…´The rest will become history – here it is, TD´s ´just-for-fun´ project: UNDER COVER !!

Norwegian Wood
Tangerine Dream Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Or should I say
She once had me.
She showed me her room,
Isn’t it good?
Norwegian wood.
She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn’t a chair.
Biding my time,
Drinking her wine.
We talked until two,
And then she said,
‘It’s time for bed’.
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh,
I told her I didn’t, and crawled up to sleep in the bath.
And when I awoke
I was alone,
This bird has flown,
So I lit a fire,
Isn’t it good?
Norwegian wood.
The lyrics to Tangerine Dream's version of Norwegian Wood describe a past relationship that left a lasting impression on the singer. The first line, "I once had a girl," suggests that the relationship is over, and the singer's ambivalence about the situation is conveyed in the second line when he questions whether he should refer to himself or the girl as the one who had the other. Nevertheless, the line "She once had me" indicates that the girl had an important impact on the singer's life.
The rest of the song describes a particular encounter between the two characters. The girl invites the singer back to her room, and he marvels at its beauty, declaring it "Norwegian wood." However, when she offers him a seat, he realizes that there are no chairs, forcing him to sit on a rug. They spend the night talking and drinking wine, until she tells him it's time for bed. While she prepares for work in the morning, the singer falls asleep in the bathtub. When he wakes up, she's gone, leaving him alone to ponder the experience. He burns a fire in the fireplace, contemplating the beauty of his surroundings, thinking back on the girl and their time together.
Overall, the song is both nostalgic and bittersweet, with a sense of the transitory nature of life and relationships. The Norwegian wood is a symbol of that beauty and transience, an image that stays with the singer even as the relationship itself fades into memory.
