According to the Taylor Dayne Songfacts Interview, Taylor grew up in Long Island, and her parents were very involved in independent theatre: the Manhattan Theatre Group, the Pap Theatre, La Mome. By 4 or 5 she was singing along with the radio. Her dad gave Taylor her first radio, she turned it on and there was Stevie Wonder playing. As Taylor grew older, she started going into a little bit more of a rock direction as the top 40 was going in a different path for a period of time - it was more of the supergroups, Jethro Tull, Yes etc. She had her first solo by first grade, and by her fourth grade she was singing Jacques Brel.
Dayne came to prominence in the late 1980s and remained at the top of the charts through the 1990s. She released her fifth album "Satisfied" in February 2008. "Beautiful" the first single hit number 1 in the American dance charts and #23 on the Adult Contemporary. The second single from "Satisfied" titled "My Heart Can't Change" reached #19 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 2010, Dayne's single "Facing A Miracle" was released. In 2011, Dayne's single "Floor On Fire" became her 18th Top 10 hit when it peaked at #8 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Dayne continues to record and tour.

Dance With A Stranger
Taylor Dayne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm dancing to the radio alone
Don't need no conversation
Just want a new love to call my own
Throw the window open
Let the breeze take me away
Ya' see I gotta lose this ol' heartache
Before the sun comes back to stay
But I can't do it on my own
[Chorus]
I need to dance with a stranger
Hold him in my arms
Close my eyes, make believe he's you
I need to dance with a stranger
Take my hurt away
Before I'm over you
Heard the city hummin'
Grab my shoes and go downtown
Won't need no invitation
Just to hear the sweet, sweet sound
And I don't want no man to ask me
"Where you been all my lonely life"
Just want to move real slow
And have somebody hold me tight
[Chorus]
I hear the heart is lonely hunter
And I believe it to be true
But this heart is learning to forget
I ever fell in love with you
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Taylor Dayne's song "Dance With A Stranger" seem to be exploring the idea of moving on from a past lover through the act of dancing with someone new. The singer is alone on a warm summer evening, but she doesn't need conversation - she just wants a new love to call her own. She throws the window open to let the breeze take her away, hoping to lose her heartache before the sun comes up. The singer acknowledges that she's been doing her best to forget her past lover, but she needs something more.
The chorus of the song highlights the singer's desire to dance with a stranger, to hold him in her arms, and to make believe he's her past love. She needs this stranger to take her hurt away before she's over her past love. The singer hears that the heart is a lonely hunter, but she's learning to forget that she ever fell in love with her past love.
Overall, the song seems to be about the healing power of dance and the idea that sometimes we need to let go of past loves by finding temporary solace in the arms of someone new.
