Pitiful
Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They keep hanging around
Like clouds
Mother save me
'Cause I can't put it down
Not proud
Take this light offa me
Just how weak
I can be
Mother save me
I'm no good when I'm alone
Alone
Mother save me
Can't pay what I owe
And I stole
Take this light offa me
'Cause I don't want you to see
What this world has done to me
Take this light offa me
'Cause I don't want you to see
Just how weak I can be
Mother save me
There's no where left to hide
Except inside
Mother save me
'Cause this boy's lost his way
Again
The lyrics to "Pitiful" by Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders focus on a plea for maternal guidance and support. The opening lines "Mother save me, they keep hanging around like clouds" suggest a sense of suffocation or feeling overwhelmed by something, which is later revealed to be weakness and mistakes made by the singer. There's a sense of shame in the lyrics, as the singer doesn't want others to see how weak they can be, and they struggle with feelings of inadequacy and guilt.
The lyrics use powerful imagery to convey the depth of the singer's emotions, with references to hiding and being lost. There's a sense of desperation in the repetition of "Mother save me," and the final line "this boy's lost his way again" suggests that this isn't the first time the singer has found themselves in this position. The song's chorus "take this light offa me, 'cause I don't want you to see" emphasizes the desire to keep aspects of oneself hidden and suggests an element of self-loathing.
Overall, "Pitiful" is a powerful song that captures the universal desire for parental support, even in adulthood. The lyrics are emotive and introspective, with a vulnerability and honesty that makes them relatable. The song's emphasis on shame and guilt also feels timely in a society where social media can amplify our insecurities.
