Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ten Years Later's song Hey Joe tell the story of a man, named Joe, who has caught his old lady messing around with another man. As a result, he decides to grab his gun and head down to shoot her. The song is sung from Joe's perspective and is full of bitterness and anger. He makes it very clear that he is not going to take her infidelity lightly and that he intends on seeking revenge. The chorus repeats the phrase "Hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand?" which adds to the sense of danger and uncertainty in the song.

As the song progresses, it becomes apparent that Joe has actually shot his old lady down. The lyrics become more aggressive and raw, with Joe singing "shoot her one more time again, baby". For years I've called Alvin Lee the greatest guitarist of the classic rock era that no one ever seems to talk about, and that's a sad ass commentary. I'll tell you right now, Alvin makes my top 5 all-time seven days a week and twice on Sunday along with (in particular order) Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, & Jimi Hendrix. No disrespect intended to Terry Kath or the great Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher who also seems to be on that overlooked list.

I saw Alvin Lee live in Pittsburgh,I always said, and I still say, he is the most accurate guitar player I have ever seen live...not only that, he’s doing it on a 335. Not the easiest guitar to play those lo bar chords on..
That was a different era. It was a pleasure in those days to turn your radio on. Fantastic musicians and bands constantly. Not only Alvin Lee, the Beatles, the stones, Led Zeppelin, cream, Santana, Joe Cocker, Hendrix, Joplin, the kinks, moody blues, Allman brothers, grateful dead, The doors, Robin Trower, Pink Floyd, yes, iron butterfly, Chicago, Creedence, Jefferson airplane, on and on and on, none of this synthetic synthesized computer generated drum machine music that we have today. I never turn the radio on in my car anymore. Never.
Alvin Lee was part of the best years of rock ‘n’ roll. He was right up there at the top with the best... millennials and generation X, you missed it!!

I was lucky enough to see most of the artists listed above. Didn't see the Dead but they were dead to me..never liked them. The rest of the list were in their own singular way so distinct and had the purity of their own sound, you can't pick any of them out and say "well, they sound like that other group". Such an array of unique talent. So glad I saw them when I did and the tickets were outrageously priced...something like $3.50. Those were indeed the days. I enjoyed every single concert although I regret that I was a bit too high at some of them but, hey, it was part of the whole experience at the time. You really became one with the artists onstage and with their beautiful songs. Good clean acid, peyote or other head drugs helped you really get into it. And I never turn the radio on either....what the hell for? some rap crap? Some sleaze twerking when you're trying to find something decent on the tube? Give me a break! You missed the best generation of musicians ever. I don't think it can ever be replicated. I just found a ticket stub I had in a box in an old drawer..amazed to see it was for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Miami on Nov. 24, 1968. I don't remember being there at all. And have no idea who drove back home to Ft. Lauderdale. I'm sure I had a great time but sometimes, like I said, I had the tendency to get too high. It's somewhere in my memory bank, I'm sure. It would be great to undergo regression therapy and bring it out of your subconscious, wouldn't it? Like seeing it for the first time. What a trip our generation's been on. We've been some of the luckiest people that have ever lived on this big blue beautiful marble zooming through the cosmos.

Good job mentioning the Kinks, definitely my favorite band. I will say this isn't lost on all us youngsters. Also there are some good modern bands. Jack White and The Raconteurs are pretty good for adding a new twist to good old fashioned sounds, and my personal favorite modern band The Nude Party, sounds very much like the late 60s through 70s, I suggest you look them up (a six piece band that makes all their own sounds).

@Michael VC Jack White is a good songwriter. His guitar skill to the untrained ear is atrocious. I like the garage feel of his music but technically in guitar is ok. Im 40 so im in-between the older gen and the new. These new kids can technically tear up a guitar. They just need to be taught that SOUL is what these dudes had. Told my friends son that while we were pickin Saturday night. The old dudes had it all plus it was new. We just rehash it.

Saw him with Ten Years After in 1973 with Robin Trower & King Crimson at Tarrant County Convention Center, Fort Worth, Texas. Caught him again with the Alvin Lee Band in 1984 at The Agora in Dallas. Incredible talent, and a huge influence, RIP, Alvin Lee.

Jimmy page is probably the most creative, but Alvin Lee and Richie Blackmore are the most accurate. They can duplicate what is on their albums, in person. Not even Jimmy page can do that, although, Jimmy page is My favorite, but what about Keith Richards? everyone over 40 can recognize a Keith Richards introduction within three notes, sometimes two notes, sometimes OneNote. You know instantly, that’s satisfaction, that’s can’t you hear me knocking, that’s start me up, that’s paint it black, that’s Angie, that’s waiting on a friend,.Nobody even comes close to having the most recognized introductions to his body of work than Keith Richards..

Holy trinity of rock guitar-Jimi Henddix (most innovative), Alvin Lee (nobody cleaner and faster) and Jimmy Page (most intricate). I can't believe he's not in hall of fame. Ten Years After was an awesome band. Leo Lyons was my favorite bass player, too. RIP Alvin. I can't keep from crying. Alvin Lee's was a great inspiration growing up starting guitar in 68. He truly is a Rock Guitar GOD! One of the Best Players of electric guitar. His idol was also, Chuck Berry...We lost him way to soon! Expecially over a operation?

Alvin Lee was actually the first big concert I went to, as a young teen -- opening for Steppenwolf and the Marshall Tucker Band at a big outdoor show in Sturgis during the Bike Rally. Quite the scene. Alvin was as terrific as shown here. (Cannot say the same for the other acts on the billing.)

Wow,I'd forgotten just how good of a guitarist Alvin Lee was, he's done the best Hey Joe since Hendrix ...Different,but in the same club of the greats but I never see him in the top 10 guitar player's in music polls.

I was serving over in Vietnam on the USS Midway and every time we headed back to the states our ships DJ would play “Goin Home” by Ten Years After and when I hear that song it always brings good memories. Thank you Alvin Lee and RIP.

Alvin/TYL recorded this performance for OGWT on 20th November 1979. On the 26th I attended their gig at the Birmingham Odeon, the first date of a short UK autumn tour. It was a truly memorable night, made extra special by getting to shake hands with Alvin at the end of the show. A precious personal memory of a man who absolutely was/is one of the greats.

Absolutely LOVE this version of a great song. Alvin Lee is without a doubt one of the greatest. The drummer (with his double kit) rivals Keith Moon with his playing. I've never seen a double-nek bass before either.
