School music teacher here. This minor 3rd interval (so-mi in tonic solfa) is the first we teach to young children. Why? It's the first interval children instinctively use. That sing-song chant of "Mum-my" that drive the parent of every toddler insane uses this interval. Do any of these sound familiar?

These first songs that children learn (and create) are based around this interval too. We know that the brain, particularly in regards to sound, craves familiarity and patterns. It isn't too much of a stretch to hypothesise that what people are responding to with this "millennial whoop" is just their most naturally ingrained musical sound.

@Jacob Lynch Pop is definitely a genre on its own. Billboard charts list songs by popularity, and for the past few years its been a lot of rap, trap, and hip-hop - none of which are pop. Pop itself is difficult to define because it takes so much inspiration from other genres, but theres a lot of sub-genres and niche artists that are worth looking into

Great singers an' all, you know sweet voices, great blend and technical ability - but that device has aged really, really badly. It's now just so kitsch it makes the music unlistenable to an audience of modern ears. Some would say it was kitsch the day it came out but they were successful with it for a season - torturing Bach. Even 1968-69 pop vibes are more bearable.

Every genre has something annoying about it and it's almost never picked up by future genres. And most people don't know how bad it's been at different times.

One that annoys me more than the "Whoop" has a single song that's performed on a regular basis, today: "Deck The Halls". For a short period of time before the Baroque period, vocal music had "Fa la la's" and variations of that, all over the place.

The Romantic periods use of vibrato in opera - especially when it's sopranos or tenors - is more annoying than the ""Whoop" and makes most opera unlistenable, for me.

TO be honest I always thought that was pretty lame - not the song , the song is awesome but vocalising that was lame, IN the world I inhabit No and Yeah mean opposite this so when you go 'Yeah Yeah YEAH NO No No you're just saying nothing in that you're saying you don't know what the hell you ARE saying? 'Yeah' is basically an affirmation, while 'no' is a denial or non-affirmation - as in 'No, man that ain't cool'. In certain songs, a very limited number, that idea could work fairly well. In the vast majority of songs it reads as dumb, even if it sounds kinds OK when you sing it, it just doesn't mean anything of any substance at all.

Rock and roll in the 50's and 60's introduced us to a lot of music not based on a major triad and the perfect 5th, but instead on the perfect 4th, which is still common today. I have a feeling that this is just a new phenomenon that may fade and cycle in popularity but never truly disappear.

I’m a proud member of Generation X and absolutely love the kick ass music from the ‘90’s. After the year 2000 things really went down hill for the most part and as this video shows have gotten even worse in the 2010’s. HOWEVER, the older teens/young adults that comprise Generation Z have really turned music back around again.

Actual rock bands using real instruments like guitars and drums and not an autotune or Millennial Whoop in sight are taking over again. Check out the incredible Pip Blom (age 22), Dream Wife (early 20’s), Soccer Mommy (21) and Snail Mail (19) to see what I mean.

Sorry to all the Millennials reading this, but you are the one generation who provided absolutely nothing unique or interesting to music. Even before the beginnings of the Rock era in 1955 there was great blues in the 1930’s and ‘40’s. Needless to say the ‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s all gave us fantastic tunes as well. But from about 2000 to 2015 things were just awful. So glad good music has returned at last!

I was thinking of the "whoo" in rap songs :P, but this is definitely prominent too. Easy to sing and remember, but makes songs just that more trite, because no one sings actual words anymore. It evolved from being in the background of a song as an embellishment to being the actual chorus. Looking at you, new Fall Out Boy.

To me it's all just a slightly more cheerful version of modern chart music's overwhelmingly miserablist "I can't sing (and this isn't really any kind of memorable tune anyway) but I CAN go up a note or two and then back down a note or two" mumbled wailing style.

Just to be annoying. A lot of studies into the brain and how it functions show that before you make a decision the brain has already made that decision before you become aware of making that decision. So is that you think you love to try new things? or is it your brain telling you to try new things? When you add into thats embedded into the human DNA that you like things that are similar because of your survival instinct and your need to be a part of a group. It just makes everything so much more interesting.
If this does not make sense its because i have just barely scratched the research about the human brain, buts its mind boggling to think that i like drinking a Lewis Hamilton Monster Energy Drink, i think i like it but is it my brain that likes it? Is subcouncious? or am i concious? its fucking "wow" atleast to me.

just a side note. Im a teacher in history and religion and i had guests from the church over and they asked the students what they were being taught, and they told the guests about this, which i wrote above. And to them they could not grasp it or understand or even want to understand it, all they said and i quote "God gave us free will". And im sorry to say this but im not a good host when it comes to religious people spouting what i think is bullshit. So i said "Well is it god telling you that? or is that your brain? Maybe its our brains that decide everything for us" Because before we even become aware of making a decision the brain has already a milisecond before made that call for us.

p.s i hope that anyone found this intersting, maybe im just writing bullshit. Too that all i can say, its not me writing its my brain writing for me.

It's a minor third, the natural interval for humans. Whenever our voice drops in pitch in a conversation, it's usually that interval. Go watch a basketball game, when the crowd chants "Air-ball!" that's also a minor third.

Yes, you're correct, and despite playing various instruments for 30 years, touring across the country in a number of bands and recording/mixing/mastering a number of albums for other musicians I am by no means an expert either! We spend our entire lives learning and that's part of what makes it worth living. I still don't know how to properly refer to an interval in context to a separate root key! haha

Actually in a C major triad C - E - G a minor third is stacked on top of a major third. In a C minor it is opposite. If you play 4 notes in a chord there is a little interesting chord building. An Am7 has a C major triad stacked on top of the root A. That is why you can change from C to Am7 since 3 notes are in common. Of course using the circle of 5ths going to the next chord always has one common note. Progressions like C Am F G or C Am Dm G7 is everywhere. I am not an expert, but I am learning jazz piano/guitar now.

What genre isn’t boring for you then? Because considering that the majority of pop music doesnt feature the whoop, and pretty much every genre has it’s own formulas that are prevalent throughout...then I’d say it’s silly to equate some songs using a formula to being a reason al songs in that genre are boring.

It’s like saying all Rock is boring because Power Chords. Or all Blues is boring because of the bo diddley beat. Or all rock n roll is boring because 4 bar blues. Or hip hop is boring because triplet flow/migos flow. Some songs using Formulas = entire genres boring.

Interestingly, this same interval is a common one even among children. Ever heard a child sing, “You can’t catch me~” or anything similar? It’s the same interval.
For some reason, these specific notes are something that our society as a whole connects with, not just millennials.

We are in the 2nd generation of "Everyone Gets A Trophy", so in order that we have the least talented people getting trophies, we have to lower that standardized bar to the "Millennial Whoop". It's the collective dumbing down of listeners, by limiting the modes of musical expression to ever fewer modes. This is reinforced by the fact that the industry relies on specific elements past musical successes when deciding which future musical pieces they will get behind with their corporate money. Pop Music is dying for the very same motivational reasons that Smooth Jazz died.

To me it's not the fifth-third-fifth sequence that's annoying, it's the "oh-way-oh, way-oh" vocalization they've adopted to project it. There are many instruments and sounds that can render that sequence, but the "way-oh" vocal is really getting old.
