I have a buddy who I have known for over 20 years who is a Tier 1 Operative. He is very intelligent, humble, sharp-minded, and does not talk about his military experiences. He has been in the military for almost 16 years and the only time that he has talked about it is after he graduated from bootcamp in 2007. He never boasts. When you know that you are the baddest dude on the block, there is no reason to bring attention to yourself. The guys who talk about their military experiences and how many people they killed in combat are full of shit.

@Russell Stoddard - There is a major difference in training from tier two to tier 1. With the most money gets the most skills of training. Six and Delta would go to burglars and prison guys on how to be better at stealth and where to stab to kill faster. That's some crazy crap that they'd go to criminals to get information that others wouldn't know so the scumbags are the only ones to learn from.

Well, there are a lot of guys that are on YouTube now that were "Tier 1" Operators and "Tier 2". They talk about their experiences and I as well as many others can attest to their legitimacy by vetting or with verification. Just because someone doesn't talk much, doesn't always mean they are the real deal, just as the guys that talk on YouTube are not always full of shit, as you say.

I lived next to a Seal when my family was living in base housing in Oahu. I was young but I remember my dad saying how crazy it was him being gone for weeks at a time at a moments notice. We were invited over a few times but all I really remember was how squared away their home was, not one thing laying around or out of place. It was just the Seal and his wife and they were both very nice. He was a more serious and reserved person, which is kind of intimidating when you are 8 years old. But yeah there was definitely no bragging or arrogance and definitely no talk about his work. Wasn't till I was a little older that I realized I had been living next to Batman.

My cousin was an army ranger who moved into green berets. He had worked with delta from time to time, when I asked him about them. He said the difference as far as combat ability goes, what separates them is that they have mastered the basics.

The selection process for Marine Recon is inarguably more extensive and intense than any of the other "tier 3" units. It's the only "tier 3" unit that has operational abilities on par with tier 2 units, to include combat dive and freefall insertion. Recon school has about a 60 percent attrition rate (of Marines who already are above average). The other tier 3 units don't even have a selection school aside from airborne and AIT.

@Joe Berger - Back in the mid 90s, nobody knew about spec ops and I wanted to go Marines and Force Recon after an enlistment because back then it was better to or you had to get some infantry training first unless you're in the Navy and Air Force who have their own jobs that people come from to try out for spec ops.
Nowadays is funny because everyone wants to be a warrior. MMA or spec ops. They don't even want to go through the steps anymore. When you watch shows about these guys, they're all mostly weak pathetic guys who came from playing PlayStation or Xbox and now there's females trying out? 😆
I remember finding out about spec ops after reading First SEAL and back then you could become Force Recon and from there ask to try out for BUD/S but not anymore since USMC has the Raiders which is a dumb name to call themselves and they're all just Force Recon rebranded since a majority couldn't pass the training and were just grandfathered in. 😂

It’s funny that nobody really understands them, however, the teir system is actually a supply and funding system with tier 1 units receiving the most funding and having the highest priority for supply orders/gear acquisition. The tier system isn’t just for tge DoD. Other departments in the executive branch also follow tier system. Their are sections in the Department of Energy that are classified as tier 1, particularily those that secure and operate our nuclear power facilities. DHS has some intelligence and “spec-ops” sections that are classified as tier 1 and tier 2, etc. so it’s more of a prioritizion for funding and supplies than anything else. Cheers 🍻

As a plank owner with TF158th, 159th and TF160, 160th SOAG and later 160th SOAR, I can say honestly that being a tier 2 soldier was never something others used to degrade us. In fact, the opposite was true. We were all adult enough to understand the each of us had a vital role to play and it showed. I was never expected to hop out of my Chinook and go full Rambo on the badguys, but hanging out with and training with the best of the best, I always knew I stood a 50/50 chance of doing it right. Being a Busdriver to the Stars was something I would NEVER change.

We had a PFC in our platoon that went to PRC & got peered out then went to Special Forces qualification selection & passed the selection process for Special Forces. He got promoted to E5 in 3 months after passing his selection process now has training for the next 2 years

I think it's important to note on the support roles; in my experience, it's not entirely uncommon for something like USAF general communications (telecom, satcom, radio, etc.) personnel to find themselves attached to t2/3 marines, army, or contracted civilians. Particularly towards the tail ends of OIF/OEF, we were getting attached to the most seemingly random units at SOF/SOC and FOBs that were well outside of our standard training. We'd get sent to like 6 mos or more of additional training just for those expeditionary missions, solely to assist in communications.

@David Hoffman I'm not familiar with that specific situation, but it sounds reasonable. What I did notice is that, over time, Joint Operations became more prominent in the SOF realm with other branches for support. The USAF just generally has longer, more extensive training in support roles that complement spec ops (including meteorology), so we started getting attached to those missions. In my opinion, it's just more economical to train a USAF satcom person to exist in the SOF ecosystem for a year than it is to sideline a SOF operator to learn satcom to the degree that it would be valuable for that period.

I think this covers it pretty well. Though I would say all the tiers really overlap. The nightstalkers are really the air support and air transport for all the tiers. I would say generally speaking the mission set of the tiers get more specific the higher you go. For instance Delta, Seal Team 6, and CIA special group, run more of your black ops missions, stuff you will never see on the news unless somethings goes terribly wrong, and probably never even then. Your tier 3 units are more of your expeditionary units and divisions. 82nd, 101st, 3rd ID to name a few. I am also glad you mentioned the support guys. What most people don't know if you are not an operator or infantrymen you are support. Everyone supports the Infantry. Air Cav, Artillery, Signal, Maintenance, Medical, HR, and every other corps or branch.

I love your emphasis that support people are no less important than operators. I spend 6 years in logistics with The Old Guard. I've met so many combat vets that insist that I shouldn't be considered a veteran because I wasn't a grunt and I never got deployed. It's infuriating, humiliating and demoralizing.

I have a 16 year marine grunt buddy with combat exp and a purple heart. Also have a marsoc buddy. I was a pog but got severely injured in training up. I've been in recovery for 5 years now. In both their eyes I am a veteran and if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. I only wish I could've done more.

It was actually the unrelenting effort of one woman, acquiring the definitive intel (not totally sure if she was CIA, but as a liason embedded with the teams that went in), that in the end resulted in confirming the location of OBL. If you want to know most of what went down, go to Vigilance Elites channel and look in the videolist, you'll know which one you'll want to watch, when you see it (tho I recommend watching all his stuff, haha).

It’s not just a difference of missions and equipment though. For example, the difference between a seal team 6 guy and the other seal teams is actually fairly dramatic. They go through a series of interviews, tests, and training that sharply hone the skills of the seals who qualified to enter green team training or devgru training. It’s not really a gray area it’s black and white.

While different units certainly have different “levels” of capability, the tiers as they apply to SOF units isn’t related to skill but that units operational distance from SOCOM. Units like CAG/DEVGRU report and take orders directly from SOCOM, making them tier 1. A tier 2 unit, like SF, falls under USASOC which reports to SOCOM, making them “2 tiers” below the overall command HQ. Reason some units appear “better” is the closer they are to command the more funding/resource allocation they receive allowing for more training opportunities/improved equipment/ and the best mission sets.

One thing a lot of people get confused on is that they believe two units being on the same tier makes them equal in terms of their training which isn’t the case at all.

Funding and mission sets. Tier 1 will always be ran by the JSOTF (forward command for SOCOM). The units under JSOTF can change but they are usually the ones we all know (ST6, CAG, Ranger recon, etc). Tier 2 will more than likely comprise of CJSOTF units (5th group, 3rd group, ranger bats non recon, etc). The C in CJSOTF is usually indicative that it is not a tier 1 unit. Combined units are almost always white SOF or Tier 2. Tier 2 are the units that conduct joint raids, training with the host nation and can fill in or support a tier 1 op if needed. The color codes are not formally used anymore though. They use unit designations now.

@Taramafor Haikido They train a limited amount of unarmed combat. The main reason is not to be able to kill the enemy in unarmed combat but to handle unruly or freaked out civilians without having to smash their skulls with the rifle (which is bad for everyone).

Special forces do not train for every possible scenario. The amount of time an sf operator would 1) find himself without a gun and where 2) being a CQC pro would make a differens is miniscule. Between the man who spent 2000 hours practicing his karate chops, krav maga or whatever the fuck you want and the guy who kept his weapon, the guy with the weapon will come out on top 95% of the time. Even at close range. The time is better spent making sure you do not drop your gun, that you can use your gun, navigation, laser guidence, local language and so on. Now, of course they still train it to an extent. But the whole Hollywood thing with SF being some master fighters is bs. They have some training (a lot of focus on keeping control of your weapon and killing the attacker with it and ofc to subdue civilians) and are fit, strong and aggressive guys, and a lot of them train martial arts in their spare time, so yeah, they would beat the fuck out of me for example. But between MMA and basically just smashing the windpipe there are "sectet lethal methods only known to SF" or whatever Hollywood have made you believe.

These guys are not circus clowns. They are soldiers. They have a weapon. They know how to use it and how to keep it. They are the best of the best and they are not fucking around with some circus dance in the octagon.

Tier 1 has the highest funding. They’re the best of the best. Delta, Devgru, RRC, 24th STS, and ISA.

Tier 2 are regular SOF forces under control of JSOC and also have high funding. 75th Rangers, Seals, Green Berets, 160th SOAR, Marsoc, etc.

Tier 3 is made up of large division sized components and seem to be given large scale operations, they seem to be a step above standard infantry, and specialize in certain areas. For example the 10th Infantry specialize in being Light Infantry capable of working with little equipment and mountainous terrain. Also they may have additional training that standard Infantry won’t have like Mountain or airborne training. 10th Mountain Division, Force Recon Companies, 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne, etc

I served with a guy back in the 70s he was a corporal in Canadian Infantry. I meet him again almost 30 yrs later he is a Major and among other things had gone off and trained with the Green Berets. He did 35 yrs in the Infantry.

I was a civilian mechanic and spent a little over two years each in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once when I was at Al Asad working on the ASV as a welder and I met two SEALs and one of them I recognized from class 234 from the documentary. He was a very nice guy. Then I saw a bunch of guys and even a girl perhaps that had SEAL Team 6 patches all over of them. They definitely didn’t look like operators. I was behind them in line at the DFAC and I asked them if they were SEALs. They laughed and said they were not and that they were support for Team 6. They told me that the operators will be wearing the Trident. So I have always assumed that the class 234 SEAL I met was in DEVGRU. I didn’t ask him though. There were Marine Raiders there also and they were driving awesome side by sides.

I was a combat Engineer, with a security clearance, because I worked in s2 , after I went to a regular line company my clearance followed me. When everyone else was off duty, not me I started going TDY as an attachment with tier 2 units on a regular basis. At the time I couldn't exsplain it other than I was good at my job and that clearance. I understand what happened to me much better now.

LOL, I got assigned to S2 after a training accident, which ultimately led me to permanent duty in a line unit. KInd of hard coming from where I was to where I went, but you are right about the clearance. I shuttled classified material to Seoul on an overland every day, sometimes at 3 in the morning, depending on if G2 needed it immediately. In the end, I never regretted my time as a 12B. Turned out to be the best career choice for me, given the circumstances.

Tier 1,2,3 is also how narrow focus their missions usually are when things are busy. Tier 1 will probably do Kill/Capture, Tier 2 will do some Kill/Capture, some Spec Ops patrol. Tier 3 will usually be a security force. Outside of the US operators will just be multipurpose spec ops. I know at one stage DEVGRU was just doing missions against guys in suicide vests who held hostages while regular SEALS were clearing out support elements.

I agree with you, but from my own experience (TACP/JTAC) this pretty much goes for all these units and supporting units. Including the counterparts from many of our allies (based on the few times I worked with them during my deployments, and during my time at NATO JFC at the end of my career). Personally I often find these comparisons between the men who serve in these units to be silly, considering what we all had to do to make into any of these units.

You can go directly thru the selection process for Army tier 1 formally known as Delta an so on from tier 3 but just because u pass the selection process doesn't mean you will be selected in the end, people that pass selection process for Green Berets an Delta still get sent back to their regular units

SF Green Berets can do both! They can be Operators selected into Delta, however, Green Berets are Unconventional Warfare and sent back into action in SF depending on the mission.

It's not super rare for Delta to pull guys from light infantry units, they are there at every selection.
You can start you're career in a Tier 2 unit with a Ranger or SF contract you may not make it but you can go there directly you do not need deployments in the regular under your belt.
Plenty of people will do time with the Rangers then end up back in a conventional unit, it is a hard lifestyle and officers have to prove it everyday. Also Rangers have just about every MOS.
Green Berets are not the most likely to be Delta , it's heavily Ranger.

This was recommended to me by the google overlords and caught my attention. I've heard references to these tiers throughout my career, but never got a good explanation. How you describe them as a delineation of how things are funded was highly informative. I've wondered why it is so damn easy for xviii airborne corps to get funding for fitness equipment while it is such an incredible chore throughout the rest of FORSCOM. It all makes sense now, all of the other corps don't even make the tier list! Fortunately HQDA seems to have signed on to the idea that expenditures targeting human performance optimization have the potential to provide a return on investment in the form of reduced healthcare burden and improved retention, but I digress. First to those on here who have served, thank you. My father was Airborne 68-70, my mother a Corpsman in the AF 65-70. I am only a former non contracted cadet 91-92 and a current Auxiliarist CG Auxiliary. I remember watching plenty military movies with a friend of min who was 11 M in the Army, he would shake his head a number of times, and though I was as trained couldn't figure what wasn't correct, but knew something wasn't right in a few of them.

I grew up respecting all who wore the uniform and continue to do so.

Tier 3 units are not conventional units. They are specialized units for very specific missions sets. I was a riverine and we are far from conventional navy. We had more training than conventional units as well doing a very similar job as SWCC unfortunately we were disbanded and merged with another unit. I got out right beforehand. My company was all trained by MARSOC and SEALS In camp legeune.

I'm here because I was Tier 3 and never realized it at the time. Until I went to enlist in the Marines, dude put in my army DOD and got a classified block. He then explained SOF and then the military. I was just like riiigghhtt. I was an FO on a COLT. Which means my leaders were a full bird, chief warrant and a master sergeant. Everyone else FKd off.

Question on terminology: I've heard that some specific groups take ownership over the term "Operator" versus "special operator" more so than some others. Today, "special operator" seems to have become sort of a ubiquitous term to describe individuals within Tier 2 and Tier 1 SOF groups. That said, is there a clear and verifiable history that identifies one specific group as having adopted the term before all others? And does that title within those teams have certain unique duty expectations? I've seen some claim that "true operators" are only those "high speed door-kickers" who are hyper focused on DA operations, that "Operators" are basically just highly skilled CQB specialists. To me, this viewpoint just seemed like a keyboard warrior argument as the highest speed dudes I've known have done WAAAY more than just kick in doors (SF and CCT). To be clear, I'm not interested in opinions. If anyone has specific experiences, books or other reading materials, etc., I'd appreciate any insights and/or recommendations.

I have read SEALs used the term operator in Vietnam, but I don't know if that's really true as none of the sources were particularly good ie internet rumors. The term came to have it's meaning the way we know it to when Delta Force was stood up. They started what was known as the Operator's Training Course, which was the Delta qualification course. As a result, other tier 1 units also generally called their qualified personnel operators. When I first showed up to 1/75, Operator was a term specifically reserved for Tier 1 personnel who had earned that designation through their particular qualification course. But SOF came in the limelight around the same time as the GWOT was ragging on, and it became more popular for guys to call themselves operators that were in units outside of Tier 1. This especially came to head when SEALs got their own rating known as Special Operator(as opposed to having a regular Navy rating like Boatswain) and MARSOC eventually came up with their own MOS known as Critical Skills Operator. Probably the best books about the origin of Operator is Inside Delta Force or Beckwith's Delta Force. They go into how he came to choose that term.

In my experience, operators just refers to anyone in SOF. I would assume because they operate in their SO(perations)F. I don't think I've heard a specific unit gain the term operator more than any other though.

From the first minute's context i would have guessed the tier, or respective colour, stands for legality of operations in which they are used -
with T1 being the ones used in "enemy" territory, with little or no help and making sure they can't be traced back to their organization,
destroying lost equipment and fallen bodies that can't be extracted, killing themselves to avoid capture and interrogation if necessary.
But that might just be exaggerations by Hollywood. I certainly wouldn't know ^^

Brother, the tier system is about reaction time to time on target and mission set. Mission set in several no fail situations require highly specialized training which cost money. So money is not wagging the dog, the mission sets shake the money tree in order to make the unit FMC.

My school had a mentorship program where various people who were retired from various large enterprises would "mentor" (I use that term loosely because it was really an opportunity for various elite types to spend lunch with us and write it off on their taxes) and the mentor I had used to work as permanent staff to the US Embassy (I think he worked in Japan, Italy, and about five fingers worth of -stan countries, It's been too long to remember) and he actually recalled several occasions where tiers one through three would actually be levied as a low grade threat in negotiations. I distinctly remember this because dividing tasks up by that and the amount of resources you will need to put into them stuck with me through the years since.

I had a stepdad for a couple years who said he was a "delta force operator" during his career. This guy was an alcoholic, pill popping junky, and overweight. He was in his 40s and could out run my brother or I in ANY race/endurance test. I watched him pull a treble hook out of his foot ripping a chunk of flesh out without making a noise. I watched him punk a 6'7" man (he was like 5'9") by telling him he would love the chance to embarrass him. I watched him hit a golf ball over 300 yards. I watched him draw a pistol and shoot moving targets with the accuracy of a professional sharp shooter. He could have definitely been lying about his career, but I personally watched him excel at a 1 percentile level of literally EVERYTHING he did. He could run, fight, shoot, golf, pitch, endure, etc. at a level I had never seen before. I once found his army fatigues with the delta force special operations badge. He was a VERY scary person overall.

I’m older and things have changed. In the late 80’s through the early 90’s is when I served. I started with the 82nd, we were trained to take airfields. I then went to Panama, that’s where I got to work with other units. The Rangers were elite infantry, besides their Spartan lifestyle, they were the same as us. The Special Forces were intelligent, humble and just professional. They were teachers. SEALS were overrated. I would not challenge one in a swimming pool, but they sucked at ground combat. Noisy, no light discipline and just full of themselves. They had one hard week of training and thought that made them Gods, smh. Marine Recon, well they get to use that name 🤣. Ask them about getting into a firefight with monkeys during Just Cause.

I made a comment on a different video similar to the one I'm making now. The main difference between tier 1 and 2 is the missions are different, tier 1 being more secretive and sensitive ie ubl was taken out by DEVGRU in a country us forces weren't suppose to be in. As far as recruiting goes once you become a tier 2 operator (AND probably with at least 10 years of tier 2 experience) you put in a package and screen for a tier 1 unit. As far as what tier 1 is looking for, mainly, is the top physical performers and people with certain personalities. I don't think the physical demands are that much more than tier 2 as for as operations go however, the tier 1 screening process only selects the most physically fit and the physical test (for DEVGRU as far as I have heard) is very difficult by tier 2 standards. MARSOC is the only tier 2 unit I know of that only recruits from the ranks of the marine corps. Also MARSOC is very young compared to other units because up until 2006 the marine corps didn't want a marine unit that would be used to support other branches of service ie the tradition is marines work for marines. A man by the name of clint smith talked about when he was in vietnam he said f4 pilots took more risk when marines on the ground needed air support and he is a man I do not question in the slightest so I believe him. Again traditionally, recon (not part of SOCOM but as far as what actually happened they probably was some supporting of other branches but I'm sure marine commanders weren't stoked about it ) only supported marine operations. I know the marine stuff because I served in the marine corps and knew several recon marines of different time periods, several people in support roles of these units and several people who tried out for recon and MARSOC.

15% of the US Army is Infantry, 3% special operations leaving 83% of the US Army being support. The Army being roughly 485,000 strong it would be closer to 8 support soldiers for every front line combat soldier. During the surge in Iraq that number probably was 10, possible higher. I can say this, knowing you have support when you’re outside the wire is quite calming and we couldn’t do our jobs without all the support elements.

Combat troops are the minority. Mechanics, health professionals, psyops, intelligence, hospitality, logistics, administration, etc. all count as support which makes up the bulk of the armed forces.

True Tier 1 units get virtually ANYTHING they need/want for specific missions, often hi-tech civilian gear.. But Tier 2 units in the US Military get excellent training AND equipment. Ex. 75th Army Ranger Battalion.

If you are exceptional, you can be invited to try out for one of their units. But just know, its not about being a good fighter (though that is important), they are also evaluating your mindset. I like how you think 101st, 82nd are more powerful than 3ID and 10th mtn when they are ALL 18th Airborne Corp. We fought the same fire fights. No only that, when i was with 3ID, we went into black zones where Tier2 units operated and took over all of 3ID AO AND 101st when they left. We walked 24 miles in 1 day after fighting 2 days straight because our pick up was ambushed. There is whats suppose to happen and then there IS what happens in deployment. I was also in 82ND airborne as well and that unit was so ate the fuck up. Wasting all of their budget on jump manifest. 3ID has WAY WAY more ranges, training and made a better soldier. Higher standards across the board as well. Marne time was 12 mile ruck marches. I never did a 12 mile at 82nd. We even did EIB at 3ID twice. I got nothing respect for those rakkasan boys. They are legit killers back in 2008.

All that really needs to be shown is that you won't be a threat to them. It's up to you how you convince them of that. If you're just another tool then what good are you? Just makes you easy to use. I noticed that someone commented about how civilians are out shooting SF on the ranges. And that them being SF doesn't make them the end all be all...
Well, just because you have served in Special Forces or Special Operational Forces, doesn't mean that you are a better shooter by default. There are many civilians that can out shoot military members. They are really good on ranges and competition shows. But, that still has little meaning overall. Why? Because being a good soldier, sailor etc, means having many skills sets. For example, it is one thing to be a good shot on a range. It is another thing to have the ability to ruck long distances, swim in and with combat gear, rappel, and move into a fire fight as a team with good professional communications and coordination. While civilian shooters are good at what they do, generally; from my experiences - they lack the overall skills needed to conduct a special operation. Unlike the movies, its more then just shooting. I have served in the Army, Air Force and after the military side - law enforcement as a civilian (I was not in law enforcement in the military branches). So I do have some experience when I say that, civilian shooters are good, yet they still are not trained as good in different areas that you need when conducting real world missions. For example, my military experience and training has helped me to be a better officer. I use many other skills and tools more then my weaponry. That makes me a better Forest Ranger vs just being a good shooter on the range.

Another thing is that a Civilian might outshoot Police and Professional Soldiers on the range, but can they do that after lugging around a 50 lb pack up a mountain for 2 hours, or can they do that in a firefight. Skills doesn't matter if you can't keep your head straight in a high stress situation, namely getting killed.

Tier 4 is where it's at, sweeping the motor pool, buffing floors, in fact tier 4 has it's own subsection within. 4-c buffs battery HQ, 4-b buffs battalion HQ and the elite 4-A buffs Divarty's floors, they get all the toys, new full green scrub pads, not that cut up into tiny bits kind but full pads and don't get me started on the actual high speed buffing machine, mmmm takes me back. We had this NCO who would give us this speech when we were feeling like all the scuff marks were kicking our butts and he'd say "I love the smell of Simple Green in the morning" and that would get us going and that floor would look like a mirror by 0600.

I was somewhat confused to hear that a 'fighter wing' is designated tier 2 status. Are these the guys that fly out of the 'box' in Nevada? Also, following the money is a good guideline. Are AFSOC units like MC130, AC 130, et.al. considered tier 2? I know they get a shit load of money.

Each operator is different so it may depend on each SARC. Some SARCs may have some different skills than others. For instance, one SARC may be fluent on foreign language(s) and that person may have an advantage of going into a Tier 1 unit than someone who doesn’t. Other SARCs may have been on more deployments and have worked with different units and different areas so perhaps all these different experiences can be useful to a Tier 1 unit as opposed to a SARC that hasn’t been as experienced. Then there can be connections that a SARC has among the military leadership. One SARC may “know a guy who knows a guy” who is involved in a Tier 1 unit and can recommend him to be evaluated for a Tier 1 slot. Of course perhaps there can be some SARCs that are still green that they may want to have for a Tier 1 as sometimes youth can bring a whole new dynamic and can be fresh opposed to someone who has been there for a while and may only last a short time.

It is very difficult. But if you truly want it and you work really hard for it. And your will outweighs your fear and doubt. You have a solid chance. No one can truly guarantee if anyone gets through before they have gone through it. But there is only one way to find out. If you truly desire it then you should go for it and work hard for it no matter what.

It is my understanding that units like the 82nd airborne division would be Tier 3, while units like the 1st infantry division would be tier 4.

Former 82nd ABN person here. We regularly trained with Rangers and sometimes SEAL teams as direct support to them on certain missions. We also trained with Marine Recon at times. Our missions were usually behind enemy lines with little to no support from main forces. We carried everything with us to survive for at least 2 days. We had our own Apache's, Blackhawks, armor, transport, medical and artillery. The 82nd is a complete force. Pope AFB provided the ride to missions anywhere in the world, usually within 18hrs, and after that we were on our own. We rotated through readiness (RDF). Our mission was "Anywhere in the world in 18 hours." Besides airborne and combat training, we also received hostage, rescue, riot, hand-to-hand, POW, and other more specialized training. Delta Force was located near my unit and recruited a few of our NCO's.

I was a Marine, so obviously I don't know EVERYTHING about the 82nd, but from what I do know, you guys have to be on-call and ready to go within 18 hours if you're on the Immediate Response Force rotation. I would say that it's fair to factor in the fact that airborne school helps you stand out from the "leg" Army grunts, as well as the fact that airborne unit culture does certain things like prefer that you have a Ranger tab and EIB a tad bit more than a leg Army unit would prefer it. I'd say all those things combine to put you guys at a higher place than the rest of the conventional army. In other words, you guys are the best of the conventional Army. Maybe one day the 10th Mountain will actually become a mountain unit again, and you guys will have some competition, but until then, you guys have the top spot.

Yes, but I've never heard anyone call us that. We definitely are more advanced fighters but it mostly just comes down to why these tier 3 units exist. Airborne units train to insert behind enemy lines, like shock troopers. Normal infantry units are taught to fight normal Frontlines. Though, most of the time from what I've seen there's not too much of a difference for the most part.

In ISA we only used the tier terminology during high level command briefs at JSOC, some briefs to other agencies and conventional force elements…and generic medal packages (obviously the real medal write ups are at the compound). And within “tier-1”, we used the task force color “nicknames”. Read off in 2018 so my stuff is just out of date anecdotal bs lol

I didn't answer shit. lol. I was an army FO who got placed in a COLT because that's what I was suited to do. Didn't even know I was considered Tier 3 until I went to enlist in Marines. Recruiter got a classified block on my DOD number. He then explained the difference between the military and SOF. Apparently I was considered special operations support. I just did my job honestly. Cool to know though. I mean I DID work with marine scout snipers and such. But that was normal for me.

Yes. They pull the best of the best from all support personnel. You look at the NBA. Each team is like a Division. One the 82 airborne division. One 10th mountain. ID, all the different divisions. Then you have your Allstar team. Those are tear 2. Then you have the dream team. Those are tear 1. Just like the operators, the support personnel are hand picked, chosen for their skill and qualifications. You do not pick a scrub to support the dream team. You pick the best coaches, best medical specialists, best weapons specialists, best Intel experts, best combat controllers. You have the best logistics, best support, and the best operators for tier 2 and tier 1. I say 2 and 1 because many tier 2 can be tier 1. It just depends on what unit you are with at the time many tier 2 become tier 1 operators.

I know they do in the Australian army in regards to the sappers and combat engineers so that the can prove that they can keep up with and not slow down the spec ops unit they are attached to weather that be the commandos or the sas.

I know some support troops here in SF and Special Tactics. They get a lot Xtra weapons, pt, etc. training. Some jump qualified too.

Funny, I retired from the military with a TS/SCI clearance and have both worked in and supported classified units and have never heard this terminology. Guess I wasn't "special" enough.

This is video is somewhat true.. one large difference between tiers is the level of government security clearance. This means Tier 1 units have access to far more “secret” information, therefore are assigned to far more “secret” operations. This is probably the most significant difference between tiers… more so than funding or training—that’s not to say those aren’t important factors.

Finally, a Ranger buddy of mine tried for assignment with 1st SFOD-D and was not accepted due to his age and therefore lack of experience.

Force Recon Tier 3? Is that because they are Marine Corps division assets instead of being part of SOCOM? Is it just the funding piece? Before MARSOC, Recon was always compared to the tier 2 units featured in this video. No disrespect but the individual abilities of a Force Recon Marine far exceed any of the named Tier 3 groups. There is no comparison.

Force recon is tier 3 not only from the command structure, but the simple size of the force dictates inability for "black" operations. Its built and maintained as a tier 3 for purpose and mission parameters. The larger the force the slower and "louder" it moves.

I see AF CCTs and PJs as tier 2 but would SR and TACP fall in any of these tiers or would they be outliers.

I would consider SR in the same group as CCT. They both go through CCT school, but the difference is their specialization (CCT doing air traffic control and SR doing recon and meteorology). I considered going SOWT (pre SR) so I looked into it a good bit. Can’t say too much about TACP, though. Currently trying to retrain into SERE.

The tier system is not based on funding, nor is the entire military divided into the tier system.

The tier system is simply a breakdown of JSOC's operational control over a given unit. That's it.

I would put 10th mountain higher than 82nd and 101st. There is a reason why 10th mountain is the most deployed division in the military with over 20 deployments since 2001.

@Ryan B My uncle was Gunnery Sgt William Little that served with 3rd Recon Battallion at Khe Sahn and Battle of Hue City under Medal of Honor Recipient Lt Frank Reasoner. I began my Military career as a Plankownet aboard USS Fitzgerald( DDG-62) in 1994. We were at 32nd Steet in San Diego at the time. I lived in Chula Vista, IB and Coronado though. I was a rescue swimmer and had thought about going Corpsman so I could go into that program It officially began in 1994. Instead I got out in 1998 and went Army. I was went Airborne Infantry and served with a Long Range Surveillance Company. LRS is the evolution of the Vietnam era LRRP Companies. Much of the LRRP Community became the 75th Ranger Regiment in 1969 though they were just two independent Ranger Battallions at the time. The Regimental HQ and 3rd Battallion was created in 1984 after Grenada and the Regimental HQ was designated 2 years later in 1986. There remained a few independent Airborne Ranger Companies and in the late 1980s they became LRS I was in one of these. The last LRS Company deactivated in 2017. They also had smaller LRS Detachments. Company's were organic to a Corps and Detachments served a Division. LRS Teams have 7 Infantry Scouts and we have no medics. My team however had three SF Tabbed guys and one former SWCC. The SWCC guy was a Corpsman one of the tabbed guys was a 18D and the other was a former SARC. Not sure how it was when the program started I used to have the whole packet for SARC somewhere in my stuff but they get to go to the entire 18D Q Course now not just the SOCM short course like Ranger and SEAL Medics. So if you leave the Navy and go to the Army you get to wear the long tab and Beret. We all went to SF together and were in Afghanistan together in 2002. I never got tabbed but I did serve on an ODA for that deployment. I also served with NATO from 2094-2009 including with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

@Joshua Little ok Gotchya. There used to be two recon school houses, one in Virginia Beach Virginia at Ft. Story called Amphibiius Reconnaisance School (ARS) and one in Coronado called Basic Reconnaisance Course (BRC). ARS has been shutdown and BRC has moved to Camp Pendleton under AITB-SOI-West. I spent 8 years as a recon marine at 1st Recon Ben and as an instructor at BRC and RTLC (Recon Team Leaders Course). We were just starting the proof of concept for the pipeline right out of school when I got out in summer of 2013. The SARC’s are bad ass dudes, we loved our corpsman. As recondos and SARC’s, we also get the opportunity to go to other courses as well such as RSLC, Ranger School, 18xx courses, marine corps SS course, summer/winter mountain leader courses, and the list goes on. @Ryan B I'm not sure if there is a course offered on both coasts or if it's actually part of the pipeline or if they can simply choose to go or not to go to it but US Marine Corps School of Infantry West has the Reconissanse Leaders Course is what I was referring to and it's target audience/population includes joint and allied service members I believe it's an option for them not necessarily part of the pipeline.
