Starting as a parody of the booming third-wave ska scene in Southern California (their first show, reportedly, was played with fourteen members, at least half of which were wielding horns), The Aquabats played third-wave ska with surf guitar sounds and b-movie inspired lyrics. Over time, their sound became even more eclectic, dropping much of the surf guitar leads and ska rhythms for more varied influences.
Their current sound blends upbeat rock and roll, new wave, punk, and ska/rocksteady with synth largely replacing their horn and woodwind section. Notable influences upon The Aquabats are Devo, Oingo Boingo, Madness, and Toy Dolls.
The Aquabats’ current lineup is The MC Bat Commander (vocals), Ricky Fitness (drums), Crash McLarson (bass), Eagle "Bones" Falconhawk (guitar) & Jimmy the Robot (keyboards/tenor sax). Former members like Chainsaw, The Prince of Karate; Prince Adam; and Catboy have been known to come back into the fold for the occasional show.
The Aquabats's most recent album is Kooky Spooky... In Stereo!, released on August 21, 2020. via Gloopy Records.
My Skateboard
The Aquabats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
you to call. Well, I waited too long and
thought hey maybe I should call you. But by then, you had already gone.
Its Friday night, I wanted to go out. I didn't want to go t no
show. Didn't want to cruise main street, I
didn't want to go to no disco (no no). I just wanted you to come over,
sit on the couch and hold me tight. But you
tonight.
Now I'm out on MY SKATEBOARD, and I'm pushing so hard, I'm pushing so
hard. I want to see if I can see if
you're still home. But the lights aren't on and you were gone. So on my
way home, alone, I took a short cut through
the park. And just my luck you were sitting in his truck, you were
making out with him in the dark!
Why'd you go and change your mind? You can pick and choose but with him
you're gonna loose every time.
The Aquabats's My Skateboard is a song that deals with unrequited love and the disappointment that comes with it. The singer of the song is speaking to a person who they have been waiting for all day to call, but the person fails to do so. Instead of waiting any longer, the singer decides to call the person, but they have already gone out. The singer is frustrated because they had hoped for a night in, just being close to the person they love. However, their hopes have been dashed, and they are left feeling lonely and isolated. So the singer decides to go out on their skateboard, desperate to find the person they love.
Throughout the song, the singer laments the fact that the person they love has gone out with someone else. They were just hoping to spend some time with the person they love, but they have been left alone with their skateboard. As they cruise around town, they are left to imagine what their love is doing with someone else, and the feeling of betrayal is palpable. The narrative reaches its climax when the singer sees the person they love making out with someone else in a truck. They feel hurt and wonder why the person has changed their mind and rejected them.
The song deals with a universal theme of love and heartbreak that is relatable to people of all ages. The frustration and disappointment felt when someone you care about fails to reciprocate your feelings are something that people can relate to. The song is a catchy and upbeat tune that blends punk, ska, and new wave genres, making it a classic of the genre. It offers listeners an opportunity to dance along while experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions.

As one sits and waits
For something to happen
I too sat and waited for you to call
Well I waited too long and I thought
Hey! Maybe I should call you
But by then you were already gone
It's Friday night, I wanted to go out
I didn't wanna go to no show
I didn't wanna cruise Main St
I didn't wanna go to no disco (no no)
I just wanted you to come over
Sit on my couch and hold me tight
But you went out with some dumb jock
And left me alone with my skateboard tonight
Now I'm out on my skateboard
And I'm pushing so hard, I'm pushing so hard
I wanna see if I can see if you're still home
But the lights weren't on and you were gone
So on my way home alone
I took a shortcut through the park
And just my luck I saw you sitting in his truck
You were making out with him in the dark
It's Friday night, I wanted to go out
I didn't wanna go to no show
I didn't wanna cruise Main St
I didn't wanna go to no disco (no no)
I just wanted you to come over
Sit on my couch and hold me tight
But you went out with some dumb jock
And left me alone with my skateboard tonight
Why'd you go and change your mind?
You can pick and choose

It's Friday night, I wanted to go out

And left me alone with my skateboard tonight

This song reminds me of freshman year of high school when all the girls were dating older guys . My friends and I couldnt compete without a liscence, jobs/money, cars, etc.... and I would literally be left with nothing but my bike/skateboard. Though I gotta admit most of my fondest memories of high school were all the goofy wacky shenanigans my friends and I pulled during that time.

this song used to make me cry. whaaaaaaaaaat? i had gone through a wierd relationship in highschool, boning a girl who was dating some else -- a dumb jock with a truck actually -- and i used to skateboard to her house to hook up. yeah, this is a lame comment, my point is that, the aquabats are so rad, they can make a goofy little ballad like this that actually effected me in a melancholy way at the time. they're so rad, they are Super Rad!

I find it strange such an oddly specific song anyone could relate to that's cool.. most songs people relate to are vague.

When this song starts picking up in speed, I like to picture the guy in the song rolling uncontrollably down a hill in the park into town, ending with him falling in something like a cake or some laundry...Why not? He's had a bad night.
