Another Is Waiting
The Avett Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a fake, it's a hoax
It's a nowhere road where no one goes
Anywhere, anyhow
Well you're following your heart rate down

She's a rose, she's a queen
But she's staring at a magazine
In the dark, on that path
Where they doctor every photograph

[Chorus]
Another is waiting
She isn't saying anything

If you care, if you like
Well, I'm standing in the lantern light
With our weapons and our love
And I use them both to cover up

[Chorus]
Another is waiting
She isn't saying anything

But I love you and I care
So you've got to get off that conveyor belt
If I could
I would come right in and take you off myself

It's a fake, it's a con
The nature of the road you're on
Let me see your skeleton
Well before your life is done

[Chorus: x2]

Another is waiting
She isn't saying anything

Overall Meaning

The Avett Brother's song "Another Is Waiting" speaks to the existential struggle of those who walk through life's journey without a purpose or direction. The lyrics tell a story of someone who is lost and deceived by the illusions of beauty and perfection portrayed in mainstream media. The opening lines, "It's a fake, it's a hoax, It's a nowhere road where no one goes" sets the tone for the song's message. It's a commentary on the emptiness and disconnect that people feel when they follow societal norms and expectations without questioning them.

The song then proceeds to describe a woman who is staring at a magazine where every photograph is doctored, highlighting how the mainstream media creates a false sense of beauty that is impossible to attain. The lyrics "Well before your life is done" emphasizes the urgency of the situation and how one must not waste their time on a meaningless life.

The chorus of "Another is waiting, She isn't saying anything" highlights how there are other people out there who are also lost but may not be vocal about it. The singer tries to reach out to her in the second verse, expressing his love and concern, but ultimately realizes that she needs to find her own way off the "conveyor belt."

Overall, the song portrays the struggle of trying to find one's own path in a world that is constantly pushing a certain narrative or direction. It is a reminder to question societal norms and expectations and to live life with a purpose and a sense of direction.

You people saying they need to stay true to their roots don't even know what their "roots" are obviously. They started out as punk rockers before they ever picked up a banjo and went acoustic. They aren't limited or defined by a genre. They are very talented musicians they can play any kind of genre they feel like. Start listening to the lyrics of the songs and the messages and quit worrying about how a song is presented. Every album they have ever made has had more upbeat punk songs, while also have bluegrassy, country and quiet acoustic songs. Don't see why this is such a shocker. If Talk On Indolence or Slight Figure of Speech came out on a new album people would be saying they are going too mainstream.

I don't care what anyone says this song rocks especially live. This is coming from a long time Avett Brothers fan too. If you want them to stick to their roots, go listen to their old albums. Let the band evolve into what they want to be.

Well said.

Well said. Evolution is the entire point of art! If you aren’t evolving then why even bother?!

When I die, I'm donating my skeletal remains to folk-rock music videos.

I've listened to these guys my whole life. I used to sit on the stage while these guys played their gigs when they first started out and talked to them after their shows. If you're a real fan you'd know these newer songs are still coming from the same place.

@darkdemonofthemist

This song is really important to me having dealt with an eating disorder. Not many people in show biz talk about this kind of stuff.

@LaSouthernGemini

I wish you luck in your endeavor. I really do.

@Legomovie970

The music video kinda looks like it takes place in Oswego, which is where I used to go places as a kid with my aunt and my grandmother. And this is the kind of music my aunt and uncle would've listened to!

@angelicakid

Why must Scott be so perfect❤️
