Superstition Shadow Walk
The Babe Rainbow (AUS) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you want to change your mind?
But the clouds are over your head
Now′s the time to beware taboo of the black cat dare
Fallait surtout pas (Superstition shadow walks)
écraser la queue du chat
Non non fallait pas

Does the star allign?
Something doesn't feel right
He′s elegant like
Le petit femme
The black cat's back again
Fallait surtout pas (Superstition shadow walks)
écraser la queue du chat
Non non fallait pas

I found my lover in the arms of my best friend
And it felt like life would end
This must be superstition

Fallait surtout pas écraser la queue du chat
Non non fallait pas

Overall Meaning

In "Superstition Shadow Walk," The Babe Rainbow explores themes of superstition, caution, and the consequences of our actions. The lyrics suggest a cautionary tale about the potential dangers of ignoring superstitions and the belief in bad luck associated with certain actions.

The first verse contemplates the idea of changing one's mind, possibly about a decision or belief. However, the singer acknowledges the presence of troubles symbolized by the clouds hanging over their head. They warn about being wary of a taboo represented by the dare of touching or disturbing a black cat. The French phrase "Fallait surtout pas écraser la queue du chat" translates to "One shouldn't have crushed the cat's tail" and carries the message that certain actions should never be taken.

The following section questions whether the stars are aligned, suggesting that something feels off or amiss. The reference to someone being "elegant like le petit femme" could symbolize an individual who is alluring but potentially dangerous, like a black cat. The repetition of the phrase "Fallait surtout pas écraser la queue du chat" emphasizes the importance of avoiding certain actions or situations tied to superstitions.

The bridge reveals a personal betrayal, as the singer recounts finding their lover in the arms of their best friend. This experience leaves them feeling devastated, as if life itself is coming to an end. This situation further solidifies the idea of superstition and how certain actions can have profound and negative consequences.

The final repetition of "Fallait surtout pas écraser la queue du chat" drives home the warning and reinforces the idea that one should never engage in actions that invite bad luck or disregard superstitions. It serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences and that ignoring warnings or pushing boundaries can lead to negative outcomes.

Overall, "Superstition Shadow Walk" seems to caution against dismissing beliefs and superstitions. The lyrics urge listeners to take heed, be mindful of our actions, and respect the potential consequences of defying established taboos and traditions.

I've listened to an absolute shit-ton of music since the late 90's. Wow, what an authoritative opinion I have. Anyways, this album has captivated me. Among the nostalgic themes are spread these great moments of newness, of unique takes. For example, a minute or so into Survival into the 21st Century, what the fuck is that?? It's like staring into absurdity and finding some sort of confusing revelation. It gives me the strangest vibes. There are plenty of others sprinkled throughout the album. The Babe Rainbow, keep doing that. Please. This album is great because of those moments, and also because they are packaged in something that's comfortable and easy to digest.
