Postcard from Paris
The Band Perry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember when my heart caught the fever
You were standing all alone in the summer heat
I was with my boyfriend, new boyfriend
He was as sweet as he could be
One look at you and I was through
My heart switched up on me

Like a postcard from Paris
When I've seen the real thing
It's like finding out your diamond
Was from her old promise ring
Coming back from your fortune teller
She read your cards upside down
The meanest thing you ever did is come around
And now I'm ruined
(I'm ruined)

In the evening you can catch me daydreaming
Did that moment send you reeling just like me
I should've gone over, right over
I should've never let you leave
But it's the never knowing that keeps this going
And drives me crazy

Like a postcard from Paris
When I've seen the real thing
It's like finding out your diamond
Was from her old promise ring
Come back from your fortune teller
She read your cards upside down
The meanest thing you ever did is come around

Just when I thought things were alright
My eyes played tricks on my mind
Will I ever be satisfied
'Cause all I ever seem to find

Is a postcard from Paris
When I need the real thing
It's like finding out your diamond
Is from an old promise ring
Come back from your fortune teller
She read your cards upside down
The meanest thing you ever did
The cruelest thing you ever did
The meanest thing you ever did is come around

I am ruined
I'm ruined

I am ruined, yeah
I am ruined, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Band Perry's song "Postcard from Paris" is essentially about a meeting of two people that left an everlasting impression on the singer that she couldn't shake off. She remembers when she saw the object of her affection standing alone in the summer heat when she was with her then-boyfriend. One look at him and her heart caught the fever and she was through with her current beau. However, she didn't pursue it, and now she's left with a feeling of regret. She compares it to receiving a postcard from Paris, a place she's never been, but she knows it's not the same as experiencing the real thing. She thought she was okay until she realized that her eyes were playing tricks on her, and she'll never be satisfied, always looking for the real thing that she never got to experience.

The singer's love interest was a postcard from Paris. In other words, he was a fleeting and transcendent moment that passed her by, and they never got to experience the real thing. The song is a sentimental ode to a love that could have been but never materialized. The song represents an ideal love, an idea of love that the singer has built up in her head but never got to experience. The singer's ideal love is always out of reach, and she's continuously chasing after it, always looking for something that's just out of her reach. It's a poignant and relatable song that speaks to the listeners about the idea of love that we all carry within us.

In 2021 this still sounds great! Love her voice...and her facial expressions in this video show her personality...which is adorable.

I love the Band Perry. I've seen them twice in concert. Once in 2014 and the other time last night. All I can say is their studio recorded music sounds amazing but they sound a thousand times better live.

They were amazing at the Lorain county fair. They were funny as hell, and sounded great. The bass kinda hurt, it was pretty sweet.

I initially didn't like this when it first came out, but it grown to be one of my favorite. It just gives me this feeling that not even the popular songs these days can replace. Its best when you're singing along.
