Home Again
The Basics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I quit my job on a Friday
Told all my friends it's goodbye (eh)
Within a week I was flyin'
'Cross the sea
To where I'm meant to be

Everything felt like a failure
I'd had enough of Australia
The grass is greener philosophy
I don't wanna be

The sun, it crosses in the sky
As I close my tired eyes
When I wake I will
Be home again
Home again

She said that we were connected (oh)
I don't know what I expected (oh)
Maybe I hoped she could rescue me
From everything
Now I'm there again

But the sun, it crosses in the sky
As I close my tired eyes
When I wake I will
Be home again
Home again

The sun, it crosses in the sky
As I close my tired eyes
When I wake I will
Be home again
Home again

Home again
Home again
Home again

I have to wonder at night
Could I have stayed there to fight for it
But there's no sense in denyin'
I was all alone
Now I'm comin' home

Everything right where I left it
I don't know what I expected
She said that we were connected

And the sun, it crosses in the sky
As I close my tired eyes
When I wake I will
Be home again
Home again

The sun, it crosses in the sky
As I close my tired eyes
When I wake I will
Be home again
Home again

Home again

Home again
Home again

Overall Meaning

The Basics’ song Home Again is a reflective and emotional piece about leaving one's home country and returning to it, with themes of independence, connection, and metaphorical journeys. In the first verse, the singer recounts quitting their job and leaving Australia, feeling like a failure and disconnected from the "grass is greener" mentality. However, they ultimately find solace in their return home, which is illustrated through the repetition of the line "the sun, it crosses in the sky" and the image of closing their eyes before waking up in their country of origin.

The second verse introduces a relationship that the singer hoped would provide them with stability, but ultimately they realize it is not the solution to their problems. The bridge adds another layer of reflection as the singer wonders if they could have fought for their place in Australia but ultimately accepts that coming back home was the right decision. Throughout the song, the theme of "home" serves as a metaphor for a sense of belonging and contentment, rather than just a physical location.

Overall, the lyrics of Home Again touch on the universal themes of identity, self-discovery, and finding one's place in the world. The song’s simple, emotive melody and lyrics allow the listener to easily connect to its message and feel the singer's emotions throughout their journey.

Somebody knows where can I find all The Basic's CDs? They are simply amazing, I loved them very much. I'm a The Police/ Sting's fan for more than 30 years and I discovered Gotye/ The Basics due to Gotye was being compared to Sting. So I went to check and WOW!!! Gotye is amazing, wonderful, immediately I felt in love by him, his voice, his talent, his beauty... His rock band, The Basics,  is amazing and wonderful too. I loved instantly these guys. Now I'm a super Sting, The Police, Fiction Plane (the rock band of Sting's son), Gotye, The Basics's fan. I don't know who has the most beautiful voice: Sting, Joe Sumner or Gotye!!! All of them are A M A Z I N G vocalists. At second place, I love U2 and Coldplay too.
