If you really sat down and looked, a lot of that $267 is dead $$$ being paid to players who are likely out of the game, or at least off the Dodgers. Sure, they have more $$ than most to spend, but throwing $$ at players does NOT make you winners—-ask the Padres. Ask the Yanks.

Lemme drop a real mind blower on you folks. The 2 men who were responsible for creating the analytically minded Rays? Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi. Then those 2 men went to the Dodgers once they were under this ass kicking new ownership. Instituted their brand of analytics, and started winning immediately. Now Farhan is in SF, and whad’ya know? They’re the best team in baseball now.

Love ya Rhino, but there’s so much more to the story. And I have a shit ton of respect for winning like this as long as they have.

Even though the Rays success is an argument against a salary cap, I still think it’s incredibly unfair how hard it is for small market teams to get to the level that the Rays are on. Even though they’re good now they’re much less likely to build a dynasty and compete every year with a similar core of players which is vital for postseason success. Imagine how good the Rays already great record against AL East teams would be if they were on the same footing as the large salaries of the Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays. All the factors against the Rays and other good small market teams like the Athletics are only a tribute to their success but a teams greatness shouldn’t be based around how much revenue your team can pump into player salary.

Born and bred Tampa fan here. They have been doing this forever. The problem is they grow these super teams and can’t afford to pay the guys enough to stay. Hence 0 World Series titles at the end of the day which is pretty much all that matters to most fans.

I know exactly what you mean. I am an Oakland A's fan and I feel the same way. Every few years the A's have a really good team only to blow it off the first series of the playoffs. Then a one by one of our All Star players leave because we can't no longer afford them. Then we suck for a few years, then we are good again, and the same thing repeats itself. We are a freaking farm, a farm. It's so disappointing to see the team you root for go through this time after time.

@pizzajona the Yankees also get a slice of the revenue share though, I understand low-spending teams get a way better cut of the pie, but the thing that makes the most money in sports is winning and winning championships, that’s what fills the stands and in baseball, they rely on ballpark game day revenue - not TV contracts, unlike the other 3 major sports who make most of their money via TV contracts and not game day sales (although the game day sales help their bottom line). So I agree with you - the rays do have an incentive technically to spend very little, but I’m arguing that the incentive is actually stronger to spend money in order to win championships and fill the seats, rather than be extremely competitive with a low-spend roster

Small teams have revenue sharing. Rays get about $100M in additional revenue a year from this. They can have a higher salary but the owner doesn’t want them to. He’s quoted as saying you could spend $50M more a year but would only do it for two superstars

There aren’t luxury caps but for Dodgers or Yankees to pay so they have to pay a fine for going over a certain number and more one of these thresholds and high go up the high the fine I think fine with way things are if Oakland and Tampa can constantly make playoffs runs see reason to change it we have to figure out dh and shorting the season first.

While this is true, the lack of salary cap may have lead to more innovation, however what do we do once larger organizations use these kinds of analytics and have more money to sign players. The lack of salary cap isn't destroying the game per say, but it makes it lack parody which makes the MLB even more boring than it already is. Even as a fan of baseball there are tons of meaningless games and the season takes forever. The 2020 season was more exciting because there were less games, small teams were threatening to make the playoffs, anybody who was hot at the right time could've done it. Just saying I don't think over 100 games and playing April to November every year is just excessive

A salary cap in baseball doesn’t make sense because baseball can be unreliable like that, sure you can do what the yanks did and sign a guy to a huge deal because of one great or a few seasons and they slump bad some never figure it out again. It’s up to the team to take that risk. Also, in baseball there’s no such thing as not guaranteed money, it gives added risk to the owner and gives the player more push in contract negotiation. Let’s face it most sports the team has more leverage than the player, I like baseball being pretty player friendly once your an established player.

Baseball essentially do have a salary cap though. The Luxury tax threshold is basically a cap. If you exceed it a little you pay tax, if you go past alot you're severely punished. No team will ever allow themselves to be subject to those penalties. Therefore it's basically a cap.

This is how sports is in the rest of the world. I think the salary cap is a pointless concept anyway. It just stops teams getting too much depth in the NBA, NFL and NHL but in the NBA in particular the most attractive cities to live in end up with the best players and you get powerhouses like the Yankee’s, Cubs and Dodgers. What the salary cap does do is improve chances for younger players as teams look to improve depth with players on their rookie contracts.

@D'KODA I get what your saying and I do like aspects of the salary cap. It is the best system for youth development and it keeps the competition a little bit closer. It’s not perfect though and I think in the NFL in particular the cap needs to be raised because season’s can be ruined because of injuries right now. That said, the salary cap system is the best system for American sports as it is pure capitalism. It’s a system Stan Kroneke and Abram Glazer have tried to take into European Football and as a result are very divisive

@Rhys Powell I do watch other sports; I appreciate your comment but you did not understand what I said whatsoever, I didn’t say the NFL, NBA, or NHL teams had the best debt no where in my statement did I say this. Also you said this “compete at the top of most major sports outside the US…” we’re talking about in the US primarily MLB, NFL, and NBA. I’ll specifically talk about the US because it’s what I know the most about, all of the teams have great depth already often issues arise due to coaching or scouting inadequacies not lack of talent. The talent gap in the NFL, NBA, and NHL is not that big hence why there’s a good bit of a parody every year it all comes down to how said talent is utilized. You don’t need Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady on the same team but you do need someone who say like Tyrod Taylor, Andy Dalton, Jimmy G, or Ryan Fitzpatrick as your backup who is capable of being the starting QB but just isn’t due to varying reasons. Hell 2017 illustrated this best the NFC Championship was between the Eagles and Vikings both played their backup QBs due to injuries and guess what both QBs did great and where starters earlier on in their careers. Also one last thing these are completely different sports in how they operate. In American football you can change players at nearly every position whenever except QB or O-line as you’re setting yourself up for failure due to a lot of reasons too long to explain. Although I do agree with you on the matter on great depth is 100% required and good to have but you don’t need to spend 80 million dollars on a backup safety when you can train up a rookie safety to be a solid player for only 20 million for a couple years. The talent gap isn’t that big.

@D'KODA mate if you think the best NFL, NBA, NHL teams have depth you need to start looking at other sports. If you want to compete at the top of most major sports outside the US you are required to have a squad with at least 2 or 3 players in each position that would start for the vast majority of the other teams in the league. You’d also have two starting lineups of world class players at the very least. This is why the Forbes valuation’s of most European football clubs is laughable as the top 10 teams have a playing staff worth over £2 billion in transfer values at the very least. I would imagine some teams would be pushing £4 billion. This is all down to the squad depth these clubs can build. It’s also a lot better for the health of these players. American sports run very short and compact seasons so the lack of depth in some squads arises some medical concerns for me. I think the slower and less intense tempo of American sports is the only thing stopping players from suffering heart conditions due to the workload

It doesn’t stop teams from getting depth, it stops teams like the Yankees or in Football and Basketball’s case the Jets and Knicks from just buying everyone up. You don’t need Top 5 players at every position to have depth that’s what coaching and practice is for.

Smaller market teams complains not having money to pay players however they collect revenue through the luxury tax. If they want to keep players pay them if not then baseball needs to modify it like the NFL revenue sharing system so smaller market teams can compete.
