They were already the most famous/ popular band in the world by the mid 60s, based upon their early success with their boy band rock n roll output. It seems too coincidental that they would then become the best band ever too. They had a high profile so were more influential than others for this reason when they started experimenting I reckon. Doesn't make them the best.

It brings tears to my eyes as well. Even having no connection to a mundane lane in a mundane UK town Paul made it seem magical. The Beatles had that magic. Strawberry Fields, Elenore Rigby as well heck the list is endless. They may have been a pop band as far as a label but they were so much more. Modern day poets might better fit.

I think that's the same for all of us, JWL. Paul really had/has such a wonderful gift for sympathetically evoking the character and lives of people and their worlds/ the places they inhabit/ in a few simple, everyday words and phrases.

The brilliant trumpeter on Penny Lane was David Mason. Paul had seen him playing Bach on TV, and wanted him on the track. George Martin contacted him. David was quite famous in the classical world for playing solo Flugelhorn at the premier of Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 9, but he'd never heard of the Beatles. He took nine different trumpets to Abbey Road. Paul sang what he wanted, George Martin wrote it out and David played it. They settled on the piccolo trumpet. Some people thought it must be a speeded up trumpet, which is understandable because they were doing things like that, and the pitch was incredibly high, even David thought it was a bit high, but it was real. David went on to play on other Beatles tracks, like All You Need is Love. Paul and George Martin were arguably as much of a team as Paul and John, and they utilised the incredible well of fantastic London session musicians like nobody else had even imagined. That well still exists today, underappreciated but utterly magnificent, largely emerging from the Royal Academy and Royal College.

Can you imagine having the talent to write a song that good? The lyrics, the harmonies, the melody, the brass solo instrument breaks? And then doing it all over again tomorrow to create something new? I guess that's why they are the Beatles and we aren't. Not too shabby, boys.

I went there a few days ago. It was my first time in Liverpool and I walked for more than an hour just to get to Penny Lane... it is just a normal street but just the fact that The Beatles made a song about it is so great! I don't regret anything of that long walk to see Penny Lane, and I would do it again if I go back to Liverpool ;)

magical mystery tour is one of the best of their albums very underrated..been a fan of them for longer than I care to admit lol but hv never seen this video..must've been in the movie..seeing the 4 of them doing anything is always magic..u really hv to admire george martin's input (much of their catalog of course)but this song? adding the horns was a stroke of genius!
