Phosphene Dream
The Black Angels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky is blue and you are too
I feel like running
Your eyes are red and mine are too
I feel like laughing
The wind sayin' nothing, nothing at all
It all meant someone was gonna fall

In the middle of summer
No one haunts me like you do

Mom and dad look old again
Where am I heading?
My two sisters miss me yes,
Without me knowing
It all meant something,
Something to us all
The wind said nothing,
Nothing at all

In the middle of winter
No one haunts me like you do
In the middle of winter
No one haunts me like you

Our president then was dead to us
Hallelujah!
He takes his pills so he can kill
Praise the bible

I need no pills to kill
Hallelujah!
I need no pills to kill
Raise the rifle

Oh, the phosphene dream,
The phosphene dream
Oh, the phosphene,
The phosphene dream
Oh, the phosphene dream,
The phosphene dream

Oh, the phosphene dream,
The phosphene

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Black Angels's song Phosphene Dream seem to describe the singer's inner turmoil and confusion, which is reflected in the changing seasons and their relationship with another person. The opening lines describe the sky as blue and the person they are with also as blue, perhaps indicating a feeling of sadness or melancholy. However, the singer feels like running and laughing, suggesting a desire to break free from this emotional state. The wind seems to foreshadow something ominous, an impending fall, but it is unclear who or what is going to fall.

As the song continues, the singer reflects on their family and how they are missing them without their knowledge. This could suggest a feeling of alienation or disconnection from their loved ones. The mention of the president being dead to them is a possible reference to political disillusionment, while the lines about pills and rifles could be interpreted as a commentary on violence and addiction.

The repeated phrase "the phosphene dream" is intriguing and could have multiple interpretations. Phosphenes are the visual sensations one sees when they close their eyes tightly, such as bright flashes or geometric patterns. The idea of a "dream" made up of these visual sensations could signify a dreamlike, otherworldly state of mind. Alternatively, the phrase could be a metaphor for the fleeting nature of happiness and the illusory nature of reality.

This last song, Yellow Elevator #2; I wanted to tell how I experience it.
First, I meditate and come to myself, purely focusing the music "into my body".
At the point where he says; "Nothing's the same after that yellow elevator . Seeing through golden light"
I imagine myself sitting in not 1, but 2 elevators. 1 going up but not somewhere els, right above my head up to the sky, slowly.
And at the same time I imagine 1 going down.
At this point I start singing along and I feel this incredible inner power; one thats keeping me grounded and down to earth and myself.
And the other connected to the sky and all in between.
One weird thing happens; my voice disappears.

After this album, I started meditating on it more frequently and found out that people often dwell off to "other places, objects" or a "person".
I am highly sensitive and also discovered my creativity in my head cud lead to chaos in my mind and body, even around me.
I started focusing more on all my senses then only one. And felt them melting together as I meditated on The Black Angels.
It's also a good thing to know about chakra's if you listen to these kinds of music, cus they often describe sound and feelings into colors.

So much thanks from ME....

They sound similar to some of The Doors' work, but they have clearly defined their own sound. i can see how the lyrics are written in a Morrisson-esque style. I think that these cats have their own distinct, unique sound but Jim Morrison is absolutely smiling upon them from Hyperspace

I actually have always hated the doors, but absolutely I love this band, for going on 10 yrs now, haha. I do agree and see the similarities though. Cheers bro.

This album is so great and breathtaking, but the final song is really the culmination of all the beauty in this album, it makes me cry.

I would give this album a 9.8 or 9.9. Absolutely the best psychedelic rock album to come out since tthe 1960's. Believe me, & I NEVER SAY THIS, EVER....until now.
