Grown So Ugly
The Black Keys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got up this morning
And I put on my shoes
I tied my shoes
Then I washed my face
I went to the mirror
For to comb my head
I made a move
Didn't know what to do
I tipped way forward
Got to break and run

Baby, this ain't me
Baby, this ain't me
Got so ugly I don't even know myself

I left Angola
1964
Go walking down my street
Knock on my baby's door
My baby come out
She asks me who I am
And I say, honey,
Don't you know your man?
She said my man's been gone
Since 1942
And I'll tell you Mr. Ugly,
He didn't look like you

Overall Meaning

The Black Keys' song "Grown So Ugly" is a blues-inspired number that tells a story of a man who feels lost and disconnected from himself. The opening lines of the song describe the singer's mundane morning routine of putting on shoes, washing his face, and combing his hair. However, despite the familiarity of these actions, the man feels a sense of unease and confusion. He makes a sudden move without knowing what to do and ends up tipping forward and running away. This sets the tone for the rest of the song as the singer grapples with his own identity and appearance.

The chorus of the song, "Baby, this ain't me. Got so ugly, I don't even know myself," speaks to the man's internal struggle with his own sense of self. He no longer recognizes himself and feels that he has become "ugly" in some way. The second verse of the song sees the man revisit his hometown and knock on his lover's door, but she fails to recognize him, saying that her man has been away since 1942 and did not look like the man in front of her. The singer's confusion and sense of alienation are further highlighted as he realizes that his past self and present self are seemingly incompatible.

Overall, "Grown So Ugly" is a haunting song that explores themes of identity, alienation, and self-discovery. Its bluesy production and soulful lyrics make for a powerful listening experience that resonates with anyone who has ever struggled with their own sense of self.

Actually, no. Sorry to say that, but this is a cover of a cover. The original one is a nice song of Robert Pete Williams, covered by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. The Black keys' cover share the lyrics with the last one, not with the original. The Beatles' A Day in the Life is a totally different concept, lyrics, meaning. I'd be glad to better understand your opinion.

@Massimiliano Mottola thanks for the origin of the song, I was just comparing the songs because they both list what they do in the morning similarly. At least in the "woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head" section of the song

Flsun Racer

@Massimiliano Mottola Howard, it's Beefheart. It's all the blues
