You Better Move On
The Black Sorrows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You asked me to give up the hand
Of the girl I love
You tell me I’m not the man
She’s worthy of
But who are you to tell her who to love?
That’s up to her
Yes, and the Lord, above
You better move on
Well, I know

You can buy her fancy clothes
And diamond rings
But I believe she’s a-happy with me
Without those things
Still you beg me to set her free
But my friend, that will never be
You better move on
I can’t blame you for lovin’ her
But can’t you understand, man
She’s a-my girl

And I-I-I, I’m never gonna let her go
‘Cause I-I-I, I-I love her so
You might think you’d better go
Now, I’m gettin’ mighty mad
You’ve asked me to give up
The only love I’ve ever had
Maybe I would, oh, but I love her so

Never gonna let her go
You better move on

Overall Meaning

The Black Sorrows's song "You Better Move On" is a song about love, jealousy and the struggle to hold onto what you love. The song is about a man who is approached by another man who asks him to let go of the girl he loves because she deserves someone better. The singer of the song stands by his love and asks the other man to move on and find someone else instead of trying to convince his love to leave him.

The lyrics of the song carry a message of individual choice and the freedom to love who you want. The singer argues that it's up to his girl to decide who she wants to be with and nobody else has the right to interfere in their relationship. The line "But who are you to tell her who to love? That’s up to her. Yes, and the Lord, above" emphasizes the idea of the freedom to choose and the faith in the power of love.

The song has a strong and catchy melody that complements the lyrics perfectly. It can be interpreted as an anthem for those who believe in the power of love and the right to choose who to love. The song's strength lies in its simplicity and its ability to convey a complex message in a straightforward and relatable way.

Usual killer live set.... I saw youse guys in of all places, the Nerang Bowls club in SE Old, back around 2008, I guess it must have been a tune up for touring the Roaring Town record... I said to the missus, surely something's wrong, Sorrows aren't playing in Nerang, are they...? Sure enough, we rocked up and there you were, large as life, all crammed onto a tiny stage.
The best way to see such a great bunch of musos, playing your best hits and everyone having the time of their lives...... Thanks for that, Joe....!
