As The Esquires, the group recorded a single in 1965 on Salem SR-003 (Shake A Tail Feather / Down The Track). As The Bold, the group recorded and released a 1966 single, Cameo 430[/blue] (Gotta Get Some( A track that has featured on Pebbles,Garage Beat '66 and more comps)/ Robin Hood.
That was followed by a 1967 single released under the name of Steve Walker & The Bold, Dynovoice 232[/blue] Train Kept A Rollin' / Found What I Was Looking For.
They were the house band at the Playboy Club in NYC in 1968 where they played 7 nights a week (and jam sessions on Sunday afternoon to boot!) for a full year. It is during this time that guitarist Bob La Palm is said to have met and taught Joe Walsh (then of The James Gang) his techniques for using the echoplex effect on guitar (as is so elegantly exemplified on track "Free Fugue", from the ABC album). It's also around this time that as the band was moving with the times to a more psychedelic style, they dropped the "the" from their "the Bold" billing. It is interesting to also note, perhaps uncoincidentally, that producer Bill Szymczyk (who later went on to produce Joe Walsh's other band, The Eagles) took an interest in Bold during this time period and went on to produce their only full length LP, self-titled "Bold", on ABC records, (ABCS-705)
After Bold broke up, Bob La Palm then joined Connecticut's premier band, The Wildweeds (featuring Al Anderson of NRBQ fame) for a short time towards the end of that band's career, and he is known to have played on at least one recording session with them, as well as numerous gigs.
Then Bob La Palm and Timothy Griffin, went on to found a band called Clean Living with Norman Schell.
Tim Griffin also played drums in James Taylor's road band very briefly. Steve Walker moved to Lake Tahoe where he played bass in a band called Amazing Grace after which he formed the Steve Walker Band and has played on the Tahoe Queen for last 26 years or so.

It's of a pedlar, a pedlar bold
A pedlar bold there chanced to be
He took his pack all on his back
And merrily trudged over the lea
By chance he met with two troublesome men,
Two troublesome men there chanced to be
And one of them was bold Robin Hood
The other one was little John so free
O pedlar, pedlar what is in thy pack
Come speedily and tell to me
I've several suits of the gay green cloth
And silken bowstrings two or three
If you have several suits of the gay green cloth
And silken bowstrings two or three
Then by me body says little John
One half of your packet shall belong to me
O no, o no cries the pedlar bold
O no, o no that ne'er could be
There is never a man in all Nottingham
Can take one half of my pack from me
The pedlar he's pulled off his pack,
Put it a little below his knee
Saying if you do move me one perch from this
My pack and all it shall go with thee.
Then little John he's drawn his sword
The pedlar by his pack did stand
They fought until they both did sweat
Till he cries pedlar pray hold thy hand
And Robin Hood who'd been standing by
Well he did laugh most heartily
I could find a man of much smaller scale
That could thrash the pedlar and also thee
Go try you, master, says little John
And go you try right speedily
For by me body, says little John
I know this night you will know me
Then Robin Hood he's drawn his sword
The pedlar by his pack did stand
They fought until the blood in streams did flow
Till he cries pedlar pray hold thy hand
O pedlar, pedlar what is thy name
Come speedily and tell to me
Well now my name I could never tell,
Till both your names you have told me
The one of us is bold Robin Hood
The other one's little John so free
Then, said the pedlar, it lays to my good will
Whether my name I choose to tell thee.
I'm Gamble Gold of the gay green woods
Travelled far beyond the sea
For killing a man in my father's land
Far from the country I was forced to flee
If you are Gamble Gold of the gay green woods
Travelled far beyond the sea
You are my mother's own sister's son
What nearer cousins could we be
They sheathed their swords with friendly words
So merrily they did agree
They went to an alehouse and there they dined
And cracked bottles right merrily

This is so light in tempo and pacing, the story moves right along with his singing. Wonderful.

Characteristically brilliant performance featured on his eponymously titled album which recorded while living at my place.

now that's story telling at it's best, I love it

I used to have the vinyl album of Fiddlers Dream. I played it stupid until it was all worn. Would love to hear tracks from it again.
