I remember years ago listening to a version of this theme performed by the Boston Pops at Tanglewood. Nothing can compare to lying on your back on the ground on a chill summer's eve staring up at a sky filled with stars while this is being performed live.

Justin L. - It appeals to even the casual fan of science fiction, and it portrays a hopeful and interesting future for mankind. The Star Trek characters are explorers, and we are always eager to see what the next adventures are and what kind of strange worlds and characters they will encounter, and how they will get themselves out of the inevitable tight spot. There are good guys and bad guys, and we enjoy rooting for the good guys. The episodes of the short-lived original series from the 60s had many philosophical and socio-political themes and sought to present solutions to the issues raised, and these types of themes are also explored in the various subsequent series. It is fun to not just watch it as a TV show, but to immerse yourself in the Star Trek universe and imagine what it would be like to be living in those times. I grew up watching the original series, and every time a new series came out, I was doubtful that it could hold its own against the legacy of the original, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I don‘t dress up in the costumes and go to conventions, (which I might do if I was just a bit more nerdy) but I just like a good adventure story with likable characters.

This is actually the main theme of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. While TNG did use a rearranged version of this theme as its own, this particular variant is from the first film. So good, in either form though!

This is the music from TMP of course but the overall main theme is now known as the TNG theme because it was forgotten after the film and was brought back from oblivion by TNG which made the theme famous.

It's fascinating. I have listened to this theme so many times but then a minute ago I listened again and dreamed of flying to the stars and goosebumps appeared all over my body. I hope that one day this dream come true and mankind is a noble race that journeys through the universe to explore the unknown and find things that are greater than anyone can imagine....

The people who saw the first planes fly lived long enough to see a man land on the moon. The first generation to grow up in a world with silent film lived long enough to see colour television. The kids who watched the moon landings this year watched both the landing of a 1-ton nuclear-powered vehicle on Mars, and the first spaceflight by a private corporation. And they're barely in their 50's. Don't worry, I think we're good.

@sandakureva Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see another true Star Trek film. Star Trek by it's nature is supposed to be more about exploration and wonderment. It's traditionally never been action-heavy. Even the battle between the Reliant and Enterprise in The Wrath Of Khan was more strategic than action-y. It was like watching 2 men play chess.

As a conductor, I know we have the freedom to customise the piece to how we like it (perk of the job), but how in hell's name this conductor thought playing this at such a slow speed sounded good, I don't know.

This is actually the correct speed of the The Motion Picture (TMP) theme. It was meant to sound bigger, more majestic, and powerful, especially when heard through a theater's bigger louder, deeper bass, sound system.

The Next Generation (TNG) Theme, which was a based heavily on the TMP Theme, is faster to sound more exciting. Fitting for a TV show. People mistake the TNG and for being the TMP theme, only sped up or some such, because they have a lot of similar beats and the noticeable skips or clipping, making listeners believe they are hearing the TMP theme but only barely altered.

Its like comparing the "Batman '89" to "BATMAN: TAS" themes. They sound very similar, the TAS theme being based directly on the '89 theme, but they are separate compositions. Same with the TMP and TNG themes.

I'm seeing a lot of complaints about the slower tempo, and I staunchly disagree with them. I find the slower tempo to be quite refreshing, and equally as inspiring as its faster counterparts.

I believe this is actually The Cincinnati Pops conducted by Eric Kunzel. you'll find this is track 2 on the Telarc Disc TIME WARP . jtkirkfan2002 is right. This IS the theme for the first ST movie. It was composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I agree with jerrygollay; ti's way too slow. I thought so the first time I heard over 20 years ago. Other than that, beautifully done.

TMP and Nemesis were the only Star Trek movies that I did not see on opening day but I did see them both the next day. Two friends and I actually ditched our high school senior picnic early in order to catch Star Trek II on its opening day,

I can't speak as to your sanity, but this arrangement, as I have stressed in multiple replies to a half dozen people, is the arrangement from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Listen once again to the introduction and to "Ilia's Theme" in the middle. Then go watch an episode of TNG followed by The Motion Picture. Then come back and still tell me that this is the TNG arrangement. TNG began with part of Alexander Courage's TOS theme.

@Westmensch3 Only TMP used the intro heard here. Star Trek V, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis all used Alexander Courage's fanfare at the beginning. Where "Ilia's Theme" comes in during this version, themes from the other movies are heard in each one.

It was written for this tempo (though to be fair, the entire movie it was written for was painfully slow). It was sped up probably to make the intro to TNG not incredibly long and the new tempo stuck.
