From New Orleans, they were classically trained and switched over to jazz as they grew up along with the form. First recorded in 1925, they went on to play vaudeville and ended up on radio in California. After being heard coast to coast on one of the first nationwide radio hookups, they became stars of radio in NYC headlining both their own programs, as well as working on shows with Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers until the trio disbanded in 1936, mainly due to their marriages. They also appeared in many films of the time. (See youtube)
Connie Boswell, who later changed the spelling of her name to Connee, continued as a solo singer after the demise of the group, influencing singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She did all this despite being unable to walk alone due to childhood polio and other back injuries.
"There is only one person I ever tried to sing like and that person was Connee Boswell."
Ella Fitzgerald, NBC News interview
"Connee Boswell is, without a doubt, the most widely imitated singer of all time."
Frank Sinatra

Shuffle off to Buffalo
The Boswell Sisters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You get your visas 'n' all that
An' away we'll go
Off we're gonna shuffle-uffle-uffle off to Buffalo
To Niagra in a sleeper
No honeymoon that's cheaper
And the train goes slow
Someday, the stork may pay a visit
And leave a little souvenir
Just a little cute "What is it?"
But we'll discuss that later, dear
For silver quarters
Have the porter
Turn the lights down low
Off we're gonna shuffle-uffle-uffle off to Buffalo
Now that we have had the rice and flowers
The knot is tied
I visualize those happy hours
You close by my side
The honeymoon in store
Is one that you'll adore
I'll go home and pack my clothes
You can get your visa 'n' all that
And away we'll go
Off we're gonna shuffle, shuffle off to Buffalo
To Niagra in a sleeper
There's no honeymoon that's cheaper
And the train goes slow
Off we're gonna shuffle, shuffle off to Buffalo
Someday, the stork may pay a visit
And leave a little souvenir
Just a little cute "What is it?"
But we'll discuss that later, dear
For a little silver quarter
We can have the pull man porter
Turn the lights down low
Off we're gonna shuffle, shuffle off to Buffalo
I'll go home and pack my clothes
You get your visas 'n' those
Come honey, we're goin'
Shuffle off to Buffalo, Buffalo
To Niagra in a sleeper
There's no honeymoon that's cheaper
When the train goes slow
Shuffle off to Buffalo
Someday the stork may pay a visit
And leave a little souvenir
Just a little cute "What is it?"
We got a lotta time to think about that dear
Little silver quarter
We can have the pull man porter
Turn the lights down low
Shuffle off to Buffalo
Hey shuffle, hey shuffle
Shuffle off to Buffalo
Shuffle off to Buffalo
Shuffle off to Buffalo
Shuffle off to Buffalo
The Boswell Sisters' "Shuffle off to Buffalo" is a romantic and playful song about a couple going on their honeymoon. The lyrics tell the story of a bride and groom who are excited to leave for their trip to Niagara Falls, where they plan to travel by train together. The song talks about their journey, the little moments that they look forward to, and their dreams about starting a family. The lyrics are filled with humor and optimism, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement.
The opening lines of the song "I'll go home and pack my clothes/You get your visas 'n' all that/ An' away we'll go/Off we're gonna shuffle-uffle-uffle off to Buffalo" create a sense of urgency and excitement, as the couple prepares for their trip. The reference to getting visas signifies that the journey may take them out of the country, adding to the sense of adventure. The following lines "To Niagara in a sleeper/No honeymoon that's cheaper/And the train goes slow/Off we're gonna shuffle-uffle-uffle off to Buffalo" conjure a whimsical image of two people cuddled up in a train compartment, moving slowly toward their destination. The lyrics are light-hearted and relaxed, turning a simple train journey into a fun adventure.
The song also talks about the possibility of starting a family, with the lines "Someday, the stork may pay a visit/And leave a little souvenir/Just a little cute 'What is it?'/But we'll discuss that later, dear." The couple is portrayed as being in love and in a good place in their lives, open to the possibility of expanding their family. The song ends on a joyous note, with the couple singing "Shuffle off to Buffalo" in unison, signifying their shared eagerness and happiness.
