Rumble In Brighton
The Brian Setzer Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's the Rockabilly Cats
With their pomps real high
Wearin' black drape coats
All real gone guys
Cool skinheads with their rolled up jeans
Lookin' real rough and mighty mean

There's a rumble in Brighton tonight
Ringside seats for the neighborhood fight
There ain't a damn thing that the cops can do
There's a rumble in Brighton tonight

The sew fishhooks under their collars
They got razors in their shoes
I said "Go cat, go" their battle cry
World War 3 is starting to brew

Now the skinheads are all using blackjacks
And they're looking mighty mean
They got chains wrapped around their fingers
And their heads are all shaven clean

There's a rumble in Brighton tonight
Ringside seats for the neighborhood fight
There ain't a damn thing that the cops can do
There's a rumble in Brighton tonight

Well, there ain't a man left standing
So let's all go get a beer
No team is the winner
So we'll see you all next year

There's a rumble in Brighton tonight
Ringside seats for the neighborhood fight
There ain't a damn thing that the cops can do
There's a rumble in Brighton tonight

Rumble in Brighton tonight
Rumble on the beach tonight
Rumble in Brighton tonight
Rumble on the beach tonight
There ain't a damn thing that the cops can do
Line right up for the sideline view

Ringside seats for the neighborhood fight
There's a rumble in Brighton tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Rumble in Brighton" by The Brian Setzer Orchestra is a rockabilly tune that portrays the scene of a fierce fight that is about to take place in Brighton, a seaside town in England. The song introduces various youth subcultures in Brighton, such as rockabilly cats, skinheads, and cool skinheads, who are all getting ready for the fight. These groups are described as wearing specific clothing items and having unique looks, such as pompadours, black drape coats, rolled-up jeans, sew fishhooks under their collars, razor blades in their shoes, shaven heads, and chains wrapped around their fingers.

The final part of the song describes the climax of the fight, where the skinheads resort to violence by using blackjacks, and the whole scene turns into a World War III brewing. The authorities are helpless in their attempts to stop the fight, and the song's narrator implies that the fight ends with no clear winner. The song ends on a humorous note, with the suggestion that everyone involved goes out to get a beer, and they will all see each other again next year.

In essence, "Rumble in Brighton" is a celebration of the rockabilly subculture and the idea of youthful rebellion. The song's fast-paced beat and catchy lyrics encapsulate the carefree and rebellious spirit of rockabilly culture.

I like Brian's 'Rockabilly Terminator from the future' look here, but he's a class act with the best sound I've ever heard from a Gretsch, long may he continue....

@cocolossal69

I'm a Rockabilly guitar player that has bought everything Brian has done throughout the years.  However, because his label owner and friend over at Surfdog records (Dave Kaplan), started out and is still a huge Setzer super fan it seems he pretty much lets Brian release whatever he wants, giving us a ton of content that is basically the same live album/setlist from just about every tour, sands the occasional one or two different new tracks from whatever new release he happens to be pushing that tour.  Because of this, there are close to ten or so live audio and or videos that don't really vary that much in their setlist.  This is one DVD that I did not end up buying.  However, I am possibly considering buying it, if it has some really cool behind the scenes bonus dvd chapters? I really enjoyed the behind the scenes Brixton footage plus the Xmas dvd bonus footage where he and Mark Jones show you the behind the scenes look at their chart writing process for the horns.  Can anyone who owns this DVD please tell me if there is any cool behind the scenes bonus footage worth my buying it for?    If not, I again really feel like I have a dozen or so different live Setzer releases that the setlist are nearly identical sands for the one single of whatever new release he happens to be touring/pushing  for on that tour.  Thanks.   I mean I literally have close to twenty officially released live versions of all the major hits, (Stray cut strut,Rumble in Brighton,Rock this Town, Jump Jive, etc...).

@Rebelchemist
