Silent Night Deadly Night
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy Infant, so tender and mild

Sleep in Heavenly peace
Sleep in Heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from Heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia

Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace

Jesus Lord, at thy birth
Jesus Lord, at thy birth

Overall Meaning

The Browns's song Silent Night Deadly Night is a beautiful rendition of the popular Christmas carol Silent Night. The opening lines of the song, "Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright" depict a peaceful and serene night when Baby Jesus was born. The next line of the song, "Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child, Holy Infant, so tender and mild" refers to the scene of the Nativity, where Mary and Joseph welcomed their newborn in a manger in Bethlehem.

In the following verse, "Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from Heaven afar. Heavenly hosts sing alleluia", we can imagine the shepherds trembling in awe upon seeing the angelic hosts declaring the birth of Jesus Christ. The song's chorus, "Christ, the Savior is born," celebrates the birth of Jesus and the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Messiah.

The final verse describes the transcendental beauty of Jesus Christ, "Son of God, love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face. With dawn of redeeming grace." Jesus is the embodiment of love and his presence brings light and hope to all. The song ends with the commemoration of Jesus' birth, "Jesus Lord, at thy birth. Jesus Lord, at thy birth."
