the night watch
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bright stars are watching the world as it sleeps
Shepherds watch over the little white sheep
The lighthouse is shining for ships far at sea
As God keeps the night watch for you and for me.

So sleep, sleep in peace and rest
Don't be afraid of the darkness
All's well for over the land and the sea
God's keeping the night watch for you and for me.

--- Instrumental ---

So sleep, sleep in peace and rest
Don't be afraid of the darkness

All's well for over the land and the sea
God's keeping the night watch for you and for me...

Overall Meaning

"The Night Watch" by The Browns is a soothing and beautiful song that conveys a sense of comfort and protection during the night. The lyrics speak of various watchful entities, such as bright stars, shepherds, and a lighthouse, all symbolizing different forms of vigilance and care. However, the central idea of the song is that it is God who is ultimately watching over us during the night.

The first two lines of the song, "Bright stars are watching the world as it sleeps, Shepherds watch over the little white sheep," create an image of the peaceful night scene. The stars, often associated with guidance and inspiration, are portrayed as watchful observers, while the shepherds represent those who are responsible for the safety and well-being of others. The mention of the lighthouse, shining its light to guide ships at sea, adds another layer to the theme of protection.

The chorus emphasizes the idea that we should not fear the darkness of the night because God is keeping watch over us. The repetition of the line "So sleep, sleep in peace and rest" invites a sense of reassurance and tranquility. The lyrics suggest that there is no need to worry or be afraid because everything is well under God's care, both on land and at sea.

Overall, "The Night Watch" by The Browns is a heartfelt reminder that even in the darkest times, there is someone watching over us, providing comfort and protection.

Nancy Goodson

One of my favorite songs from my childhood.

John Thornbury

Back in the 1950's three angels came from heaven to bring beautiful musical harmony to earth. Masquerading as "The Browns" this trio sang around the country and at Grand Ole Opry. (We know that no mere mortals could sing so beautifully with such perfect blending.) Then in 1967 the devil made them split up. i hate that ole devil.

Maxine Russell

A great song written by John D. Loudermilk. This was the flip side ot The Three Bells.

Matthew Roberts

A delightful rendition. Too short, though.

Roger Shouse

They do a beautiful version of "They Call the Wind Maria"

"Heaven Fell Last Night" was on the B side of The Three Bells.  Written by John D. Laudermilk.  John enjoys showing off his home that "The Browns" built.  (Maxine)

Maxine; I thought only I would know that. I've always thought that "Heaven fell last night was their best song".

I don't think The Browns are "little heard." With a pop million-seller and many, many country hits, a lot of folks know them. They "taught me country harmony" as I was growing up in the suburbs of New York and I played them on the radio a lot in the '60s. The could have sung the phone book and I would be enthralled. Maxine, if you're reading this, thank you and your brother and sister for the beautiful sounds. (And compliments to the person who assembled this video montage, too!)
