Caution
The Chameleons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We have no future, we have no past
We're just drifting ghosts of glass
Brown sugar, ice in our veins
No pressure, no pain

Everybody looks the same to me
Rows and rows of faces on the balcony
I can hear them calling down to me
Come up here, set us free
Got sugar in our brains
Or a dagger in our hearts

This is not my home, no
Everyone's bought and sold
This is not my home
Everybody's walking round the dead and cold

One by one, by one we disappear
Day after day and year after year
You are run about our wasted there
Nobody hears 'cause nobody cares
Put a dagger in my heart now

Cold here and I shudder and I shiver
I want to look twenty but I can't deliver
Pains in the heart
Ba-ba-bow-wow-wow-wow

It's cold in here
Can you hear my teeth a-chatter?
The time has come for all of us to scatter
Caution to the wind
Caution to the wind
Dagger in the heart

No
This is not my home, no
Everyone's bought and sold
This is not my home
Everybody's checking out the dead and cold

We have no future, we have no past
We're just drifting ghosts of glass
Brown sugar, ice in our veins
No pressure, no pain

No pressure, no pain
No pressure, no pain
No pressure, no shame
No pressure, no shame
No pressure, no shame
No pressure, oh float away

Nothing on earth could help me, no
Nothing on earth could help me, no
Nothing on earth could help me, no, no, no
Nothing on earth could help me, no, no, no
Nothing on earth could help me, no
Nothing on earth could help me, no, no
No, no, no, no, no

Nothing on earth, I said nothing on earth
I said, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, no

Overall Meaning

The Chameleons' song "Caution" is a powerful commentary on the individual's struggle with the sense of disconnectedness and hopelessness in a society that appears to be spiritually vacant. The song opens with the assertion that the present moment seems empty, as if there is neither a past nor a future to look forward to. The lines "We have no future, we have no past / We're just drifting ghosts of glass" build a sense of existential nihilism that characterizes the overall mood of the song. The reference to "ghosts of glass" might suggest that the sense of personal identity is fragile or even illusory, like the delicate substance of a dream.

A recurring image in the song is the notion of "brown sugar" and "ice in our veins," which seem to represent the numbing effects of modernity and consumer society on the individual's sense of self. The reference to "rows and rows of faces on the balcony" seems to imply conformity and lack of individuality. The chorus ("This is not my home, no / Everyone's bought and sold") reinforces this idea that the world around us is alien and devoid of genuine emotion or connection.

Towards the end of the song, the singer adopts a confrontational, even angry tone, when they declare "Put a dagger in my heart now." This might suggest that the singer is no longer willing to accept the dominant cultural values and is searching for a way to break free from them. The repetition of the phrase "Nothing on earth could help me, no" implies a sense of desperation or hopelessness, as if the singer feels isolated and powerless to change their situation.

Amazing song. I hope more and more people come to discover this fantastic band, because they didn't have the recognition they deserved back in the 80's.

There's something invigorating and wholesome about Mark's laugh at the beginning and into the first note 🙏 didn't think a song with not too much going on technically could have such a tone and emotion. Truly a work of art
