Cowboy Take Me Away
The Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said, I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of blue bonnets
In a blanket made of stars
Oh, it sounds good to me

I said, cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you

I wanna walk and not run
I wanna skip and not fall
I wanna look at the horizon and not see a building standing tall
I wanna be the only one for miles and miles
Except for maybe you and your simple smile
Oh, it sounds good to me
Yes, it sounds so good to me

Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you

I said, I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
Oh, it sounds so good to me

Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you
Closer to you

Cowboy take me away
Closer to you

Overall Meaning

The Chicks’ song β€œCowboy Take Me Away” is an ode to getting away from the stresses of everyday life and embracing the simplicity and beauty of nature. In the first verse, the singer expresses the desire to connect with the earth by touching and breaking it with their hands, all while growing something wild and untamed. The second half of the verse expresses the yearning for the comfort of a loved one’s embrace, specifically on a bed of blue bonnets and under a blanket of stars. The chorus echoes this sentiment, pleading for a cowboy to fly the singer as high as possible, closer to God and to the person they love.

The second verse further emphasizes the desire for simplicity, with the singer wishing to walk instead of run, skip instead of fall, and admire the horizon without any skyscrapers in the way. The verse ends with the singer wanting to be alone with their loved one, with nothing else around for miles except for their partner’s smile. The chorus repeats, with the singer, again asking for a cowboy to take them away, to escape the mundane and get closer to the ones they love.

Overall, the song is a yearning for freedom and simplicity, away from the chaos and constructs of everyday life. The use of cowboy imagery adds a sense of the untamed and wild, further emphasizing the desire to break free from societal constraints.

When I was a little boy growing up in Gillette Wyoming, this song came on the radio in our garage late one night when me and my mom were painting, i grabbed my mom and slow danced with her to this song and it brought her to tears. One of my best childhood memories β™₯ Sadly she is no longer with us, she passed unexpectedly in 2021 and this was the song I played for her.
