Reptile
The Citizens Lyrics

Reptile
Reptile

There are no wires connecting your heart
To you head and your hands
So where should you start ?
There are no satellites guiding you home
So careful as you tread
In this carnival of souls
Don't let your blood run cold

This is not city that learns to forgive
This is the place where cold hearts live
Feeding off your friends and hang out late
Everybody wants it but nobody waits
Don't let your blood run cold

I'm turning into a reptile
Sitting alone on park bench
Just like a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't
Reptile

I am not afraid of losing my mind
As long as it happens a day at a time
My skin will grow thick my eyes will grow bright
And my face will grow long
It's a terrible sight
Don't let your blood run cold

They say I'm just like a reptile
Sitting alone on park bench
Just like a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't
See me sitting alone
Taking the sun
Out on the bench
So I'm tunrning into a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't
Reptile

So don't let the coast fall in
When it gets a little alone
And don't let your blood run cold

I'm turning into a reptile
Sitting alone on park bench
Just like a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't

Reptile
Sitting alone on park bench
Just like a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't
See me sitting alone
Taking the sun
Out on the bench
So I'm tunrning into a reptile
Closer than I've ever dream't

Reptile
Just like a reptile.

Overall Meaning

The song "Reptile" by The Citizens explores the theme of dissociation and detachment. The opening lines suggest that the singer is disconnected from their heart, head, and hands, and doesn't know where to begin. They feel lost and unguided, navigating through a "carnival of souls" where people are cold and unforgiving. The repetition of "don't let your blood run cold" highlights the danger of becoming numb and isolated in a world that feeds off of human connection.

As the song progresses, the singer reveals their fear of losing their mind but accepts that it might happen gradually. They compare themselves to a reptile, a creature known for its thick skin, bright eyes, and long face. The use of animal imagery emphasizes the singer's sense of detachment from their human identity and their desire to adapt to their environment. The line "closer than I've ever dream't" could be interpreted as the singer feeling closer to their true self or even closer to nature.

The chorus repeats the words "reptile" and "sitting alone on park bench" while describing the singer's transformation. The final lines, "so I'm turning into a reptile, closer than I've ever dream't, just like a reptile," suggest that the transformation is complete. The repetition of "just like a reptile" reinforces the idea that the singer has fully embraced their new identity.

Overall, "Reptile" is a powerful reflection on the dangers of detachment and dissociation. It encourages listeners to stay connected to their emotions and the people around them before becoming isolated and cold like a reptile.

I finally found this song with a web tool after listening to it a decade ago and then forgetting about it.
I remembered the title, but not the band and searching just Reptile doesn't show this for some reason.
I'm ESL and as a kid I thought this was some cheesy love song (although I have no idea why, there's no indication of that in the video). I liked music for the tune first and lyrics second, when I didn't understand them at the first listen.
But now I understand it, and being 25, unemployed and without friends.. it hits home.
I only wanted to hear the tune again and now I feel a little bit more seen.
Thanks Citizens!

@seosamh433

This was on rage in like 2012 or some shit and I’ve had the “reptiiiiiiile” stuck in my head ever since and I’ve finally found it and this is such a fucking relief.

@Nicoz82wholovejapan

Super song, super band. I'm surprised that they have not more success.

@kyachdistent1301

Well, no, they'd need to be risible, overbearing, vile and shit, be a bit like adele, bieber, rhianna, ora, glynne, keyes. All that shite. Good for them for being better. It's better this way, trust me, even if this does so much like an 80s throwback, though most half decent things do, let's be honest.

@swxo55

2023 y sigue sonando increible
