Capital Radio One
The Clash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yes, it's time for the Dr. Goebbels show!
There's a tower in the heart of London
With a radio station right at the top
They don't make the city beat
They're making all the action stop
A long time ago there were pirates
Beaming waves from the sea
But now all the stations are silenced
'Cause they ain't got a government license
Want to tell your problems?
Phone in from your bedsit room
Having trouble with your partner?
Let us all in on the news
If you want to hear a record
Get the word from Aiden Day
He picks all the hits to play
To keep you in your place all day
Capital Radio
In tune with nothing
Don't touch that dial

Don't touch that dial
Don't touch that dial...

Overall Meaning

The Clash's song "Capital Radio One" is a criticism on the state-controlled radio station of the same name in London. The song starts with an ominous proclamation of “Dr. Goebbels Show” alluding to Joseph Gobbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda. The lyrics go on to describe a tower in London with a government-controlled radio station situated at the top, that doesn't contribute to the city's beating heart but stops all the action. The song mourns the time of the pirate radio stations, which were beaming waves from the sea, providing a platform for unheard voices and music.

The lyrics then mock the state-controlled Capital Radio for their shallow offerings, urging the listeners to phone in and tell their ‘problems’ or get the latest hits of Aiden Day. The chorus "Capital Radio, in tune with nothing" is a direct commentary on the lack of originality and freedom in the station’s programming. The song ends with diabolical laughter from Dr. Goebbels' show, as a metaphor for the pompous and controlling nature of the government-controlled station.
