Their collaboration with legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller gave them a unique sound that was very humorous most of the time. Their first huge hit came with "Young Blood" and "Searchin'." They also had success with hits such as "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," and "Little Egypt."
Gardner was still touring with The Coasters as late as 2005, although he is the only surviving original member. Gardner is now semi-retired and has handed the reins over to his son Carl Jr.
In 1987, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, thus becoming the first group to be inducted (the other inductees at the time were solo acts). In 2000, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame. In 2004, "Young Blood" was #414 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs Of All Time. "Young Blood" and "Yakety Yak" were part of The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll. The band's song "Down In Mexico" appears on the new film, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof.

(Do-do-do)
I go where the in crowd goes
(Do-do-do)
I'm in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
And I know what the in crowd knows
Anytime of the year
Don't you hear
(Havin' a ball)
Dressin' fine, makin' time
We breeze up an down the street
We get respect
From the people we meet
They make way day or night
They know the in crowd is out of sight
I'm in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
I know every latest dance
(Do-do-do)
When you're in with the in crowd
(Do-do-do)
It's easy to find romance
(Get down)
At a spot where the beats really hot
(Where we are bound)
If it's square, we ain't there
We make every minute count, yeah!
Our share is always the biggest amount
Other guys imitate us
But the originals still the greatest
Yeah! (Yeah!)
Got our own way a walkin'
We got our own way of talkin', yeah!
(Gonna have fun)
Anytime of the year, don't you hear
(Gonna have fun)
Spendin' cash, talkin' trash
Girl, I'll show you a real good time
Come on with me and leave your troubles behind
I don't care where you've been
You ain't been no where
'Till you've been in
With the in crowd, yeah!
Ooh! the in crowd
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
We got our own way a walkin', yeah!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, we got our own way a talkin'
In the in crowd.
The Coasters’ “The In Crowd” is a fun and catchy song that portrays the experience of being a part of the popular, stylish, and fashionable crowd. The song’s chorus emphasizes the importance of being accepted by the social elite, who dictate what's fashionable, what's cool, and what’s acceptable in society. The first verse reveals how the singer follows the in-crowd and goes wherever they go. It also highlights the knowledge that the in-crowd holds and the influence they have on others. The second verse is focused on the crowd’s power and people's perception of them. They gain respect and admiration from those who aren’t fortunate enough to be part of the group. The third verse talks about how the in-crowd spends their time, what they like to do, and how they enjoy themselves. They dress fine, make time, and dance the latest dances at the hottest spots.
