The band's music is a mixture of 1960s-style psychedelia and folk-rock with old-fashioned country and modern alternative rock influences. The Coral have released nine albums (The Coral, Magic and Medicine, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invasion, Roots & Echoes, The Singles Collection/Magic & Mysteries, Butterfly House, The Curse of Love, and Distance Inbetween). Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. It was announced on 9 January 2008 that Bill Ryder-Jones would be leaving, but the band would continue as a 5-piece.

To make me feel good when I know I've done wrong
What have I done wrong is it in this song
I guess I'll know before to long
But I can't understand
Why she's holding my hand
No I can't understand at all
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
There's nowhere that I can possibly run
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
Got to keep on holding on
Another day and I'll try to hide
The endless pain and the tears I've cried
Feels like I'm fixing to die
She took my soul and she blew my mind
But I can't understand
Why she's holding my hand
No I can't understand at all
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
There's nowhere that I can possibly run
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
Got to keep on holding on for you
But I can't understand
Why she's holding my hand
No I can't understand at all
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
There's nowhere that I can possibly run
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
There's nowhere that I can possibly run
I'm waiting for the heartaches to come
The Coral's song "Waiting for the Heartaches" is a melancholic track about self-reflection and the inevitability of pain. The opening line suggests that the singer intentionally listens to sad songs, perhaps to find solace in the fact that others also experience heartache. The following lines suggest a sense of guilt or wrongdoing, but it is uncertain whether the singer is responsible for the pain they feel or is simply feeling sorrow as a natural part of life.
The chorus repeats the titular phrase "I'm waiting for the heartaches to come" several times, conveying a sense of inevitability and resignation. The singer appears to be anticipating further pain in their life, and they have come to terms with the fact that there is "nowhere that [they] can possibly run" from this. Despite this, they declare that they will "keep on holding on," suggesting a sense of determination to push through the pain.
Overall, "Waiting for the Heartaches" is a poignant reflection on the human experience of sadness and pain, and the importance of perseverance in the face of these difficulties.
