Breakdown
The Cross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd build a ladder to the moon
There I'd carve your name
If it would brighten up this room
But you know that anyway
I can't be the rock
Not today
Sometimes I wanna pop
Sometimes I wanna say

I'd like to breakdown, but I can't find the time
You're all lookin' to me
To keep it in line
I hope I can keep it in line

Sometimes I slow it down
To hear what I haven't heard
And when the darkness rolls around
I scream out the words
His picture's on my wall
He looks about my age
I wonder if he ever broke at all
I wonder if he ever had to say

I'd like to breakdown, but I can't find the time
They're all lookin' to me
To keep it in line
And I'm gonna keep it in line

It's gonna work itself out
It always does
At the last drop of doubt
Just like it never was

repeat 2nd chorus

Just like every single time

Overall Meaning

The Cross's song Breakdown speaks of the pressure of constantly having to keep it together, of being the rock that others lean on. The first verse describes the desperation to do whatever it takes to make things better, to the point of imagining building a ladder to the moon and carving the name of the person they are trying to impress. However, despite the effort, the song acknowledges that sometimes it is impossible to be strong all the time, and that there are moments when one wants to break down and say what's on their mind.

The second verse provides insight into the singer's thought process when they slow down and reflect on their situation. They have a picture of somebody on their wall who looks like they are about the same age as they are. The singer wonders if that person ever broke down and if they had to deal with the same issues that they are facing right now. The singer's final revelation is that things are likely to work themselves out, that there is always a last drop of doubt, and just like that, everything that weighed them down could disappear.

Overall, Breakdown is a song about the pressure of being strong for others all the time, and the desire to break down and admit that sometimes things are not okay. The song acknowledges that it's okay to be vulnerable and that things tend to work themselves out eventually.
