Not Your Monster
The Dark Element Lyrics

Not Your Monster

Once we
We were the young and the tragic
Trying to make our magic in
This world of temporary things

We were
Searching for sweet perfection
Turning it to affliction while
Not knowing fact from fiction

I was thoughtless
Never that cold and heartless
It was a play reserved for you
When you wanted something new

No more, call me when you are sober
You are too drunk to remember now
I did write you a love song
You got the words wrong

The pledge, the turn, the prestige
Are not worth anything
When we have to perform them
In front of a blind audience

We all have made our mistakes
Mistakes we've paid for
I'll always be a monster
But not your monster anymore

In the end we
Gave a birth to a hopeless dream
We had it all but prestige and
I have grown to hate our child

I learned
After we closed the curtain
And you had made me disappear
I was not the magician
But the assistant

The pledge, the turn, the prestige
Are not worth anything
When we have to perform them
In front of a blind audience

We all have made our mistakes
Mistakes we've paid for
I'll always be a monster
But not your monster anymore

I have no more cards up my sleeve
And you're no enchanter
I might have been playing the wolf
But you were the vampire

The pledge, the turn, the prestige
Are not worth anything
When we have to perform them
In front of a blind audience

We all have made our mistakes
Mistakes we've paid for

I'll always be a monster
But not your monster anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Not Your Monster" by The Dark Element speak about a failed relationship that was once filled with youthful passion and aspirations, but ultimately turned toxic and destructive. The singer reflects on their past, acknowledging that they were both searching for perfection in the relationship, but unintentionally turned it into a harmful obsession. The line "We were searching for sweet perfection, turning it to affliction while not knowing fact from fiction" suggests that they were chasing an idealized version of love, unaware of the damaging consequences it would bring.

The singer confesses that they were not always kind or considerate in the relationship but reserved their cold and heartless behavior for their partner when they desired something new. The line "I was thoughtless, never that cold and heartless, it was a play reserved for you when you wanted something new" implies that they played games and manipulated emotions when it suited their needs.

Despite the mistakes made by both parties, the singer realizes that they are no longer willing to be controlled or defined by their past. They refuse to be seen as a monster by their former partner, declaring that they will always carry the weight of their mistakes but are no longer willing to be their monster. The line "I'll always be a monster, but not your monster anymore" showcases a sense of liberation and self-awareness as the singer takes ownership of their actions but refuses to be solely defined by their past misdeeds.

Overall, "Not Your Monster" explores themes of toxic relationships, the search for perfection, and the reclaiming of one's identity after an unhealthy partnership.

This song is about the relationship of Tony (Sonata Arctica) & Jani Lyrics meaning:

Once we
We were the young and the tragic
Trying to make our magic in
This world of temporary things
(Tony and Jani when they founded Sonata Arctica, having the time of their lives)

We were
Searching for sweet perfection
Turning it to affliction while
Not knowing fact from fiction
(Getting recognition while Sonata Arctica was growing to be a well known band)

I was thoughtless
Never that cold and heartless
It was a play reserved for you
When you wanted something new
(Jani realising that the band's decisions were Tony's decisions when Tony decided to move away from Power Metal)

No more
Call me when you are sober
You are too drunk to remember now
I did write you a love song
You got the words wrong
(Jani had problems with the law by not serving in the military and his adiction to alcohol which pissed Tony off. Saying Tony did not appreciate Jani writing 'My Selene')

The pledge, the turn, the prestige
Are not worth anything
When we have to perform them
In front of a blind audience
(After changing the heart and essence of the band its not worth it anymore to perform live & because the public would not know about the inner disagreements of both of them)

We all have made our mistakes
Mistakes we've paid for
I'll always be a monster
But not your monster anymore
(Jani's mistakes of alcohol adiction and law charges in Finland due to its military service. Jani feels like a monster but not anymore an excuse for Tony to blame him for the problems in Sonata Arctica)

In the end we
Gave a birth to a hopeless dream
We had it all but prestige and
I have grown to hate our child
(It was all for nothing, because in the end it was all egoism from Tony to have the band just for him. Jani hates the musical direction that Sonata took)

I learned
After we closed the curtain
And you had made me disappear
I was not the magician
But the assistant
(Tony fired Jani. Jani thought he was equal in terms of input in the band's creative process but he realized he was a mere irrelevant assistant)

Yet the 2 fandoms Jani wrote this song about (Anette's gold dress hello) it goes over their damn heads.
People don't get Anette is friends with Tarja and Simone from Epica.
Jani and Tony call each other brothers.
Jani is saying with this song, they've moved on, its everyone else who is refusing to.

To Frontiers Music srl - Once COVID gets normalized, PLEASE tour the US!!! Please do not let American politics get in the way of your band from touring here.

Anette you have found your place. This is the right fit. Fantastic.

@Banned from Heaven What Lies Beneath is Tarja's best album in my eyes. I found In the Raw to be extremely underwhelming.

@Kim Chi Floor sounds like she's holding back on the old songs. So I don't get chills at all. Rumour has it Tuomas told her to tone it down so she wouldn't sound like Tarja because she can hit those notes. Though to be fair, I find the quality of Nightwish songs has gone down since Imaginaerium. Feels like the passion in the pieces are gone. I generally just stick with their first 10 years.

Glad to see Anette with this band now. Fantastic.

Exactly right !
