Whispering
The Del-Vikings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whispering bells,
Whisper low,
Whispering bells,
Love you so,
Bring my baby
Oh my baby back to me.
(Baby back to me)
Whispering bells,
Loud and clear,
Your sweet chimes
Glad to hear,
Bring my baby
Oh my baby back to me.
Whispering bells,
Whisper low,
Whispering bells,
Love you so,
Bring my baby
Oh my baby back to me.
(Baby back to me)
Whispering bells,
Loud and clear,
Your sweet chimes
Glad to hear,

Bring my baby
Oh my baby back to me.

Overall Meaning

The Del-Vikings' song, "Whispering," features a consistent repetition of the phrase "Whispering bells, whisper low," with only a few lines of variation. The lyrics express the singer's longing for their beloved to return, and they call on the bells to help bring them back. The bells represent a hopeful symbol of love and promise, as they ring "loud and clear" with "sweet chimes" that "glad to hear."

The repetition of the chorus highlights the intensity of the singer's desire to be reunited with their loved one. The lyrics are simple but effective, as the use of the word "baby" adds an emotional depth and intimacy to the message. The melody carries the yearning tone of the lyrics, with a catchy and upbeat sound that contrasts with the sorrowful longing in the words.

Overall, the song is a classic example of doo-wop music, characterized by its soaring harmonies and romantic themes. The simple lyrics and catchy melody ensured its popularity, with the song reaching number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1957.

Thank you, Rob Reiner for putting this tune into the soundtrack of Stand By Me. A lot of younger people (back in the 1980s) heard this one for the very first time because of that flick. Now, if only those same whispering bells would bring my darling and sweet baby, Barbra, back to me from Heaven (where she's been since November 2010). Barbra -- this one's for us on Valentine's Day 2012. God knows how much I miss you. Barbra, I love you beyond Space/Time!

The Del-Vikings were ground breakers as they were one of the first successful inter-racial vocal groups all the way back in 1956.
