Graveyard
The Devil Makes Three Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna tell you a story
Ain't got no characters in it but me
I wanna sing you a sad song
Most of it I don't expect you to believe
It starts off just the Whiskey and Wine
Miles of travel and some real good times
But it ends in a dark corridor
Where there ain't no windows
And there ain't no doors

Well that's me
Just a'drinkin' off this bottle
And a'driftin' out to sea
Well that's me
Just a'sittin here starin'
And a'shakin' like a leaf
Well that's me
Just a'leanin' on my shovel
In this graveyard of dreams
Yeah that's me
Just a'leanin' on my shovel
In this graveyard of dreams

I wanna take you to a shipwreck
A thousand miles underneath the black sea
It looks like everybody's sleeping
But look close they are dead indeed
I wanna lead you to an armchair
Deep black in the files of my mind
I wanna sit you in the candle's light
Where I've been spendin' all of my time

Well that's me
Just a'drinkin' off this bottle
Is it drinkin' off of me
Now that's me
Just a'sittin' here starin'
And a'shakin' like a leaf
Well that's me
Just a'leanin' on my shovel
In this graveyard of dreams
Yeah that's me

Just a'leanin' on my shovel
In this graveyard of dreams

Overall Meaning

The Devil Makes Three's song "Graveyard" is about a man who is drowning in his own despair and regrets. The singer admits that he has made mistakes in his life, and now he is paying the price. He starts off by telling a story about his past, where he had fun drinking whiskey and traveling, but it all ended up in a dark place. The dark place he refers to is maybe his own mental state or the realization of the ultimate cost of his lifestyle. He feels trapped and hopeless, surrounded by empty dreams that are represented by this graveyard he is leaning on his shovel in.

Throughout the song, he shifts from one story to another, highlighting different moments in his life that have brought him to his current state. He takes the listener to a shipwreck that symbolizes his life, saying that everyone around him is dead. He leads them to an armchair in the deep files of his mind, where he sits alone with his thoughts. He is well aware of how much he has lost and how alone he is.

The song's lyrics are poetic and poignant, conveying a deep sense of melancholy and despair. The lyrics are sung with an almost sarcastic tone, as if the singer knows he has no one to blame for his situation except himself, but now it's too late to go back. The song is a powerful piece of art that makes you reflect on the consequences of one's actions and the value of life.

Yall played at my best friends house in Portland oregon. His name was Peter. We jammed for a minute in the basement. Its funny how such treasured moments feel so natural and regular while they are happening. I miss those days.. and i miss my best friend. I love you Peter. Save a good seat for me in the great gig in the sky brother.

No matter how hard the times get the music is just as soothing

The man I absolutely love the devil they relieve something in but the fact that God gave Willie Nelson a backup is absolutely awesome
