The Plank
The Devil Makes Three Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're mumbling words
But I can't hear anymore
You're totally entertained
That I am absolutely bored
To the sharks with your conversation
And see what they say
As you're thrown overboard
And disappear into the waves

Down to Neptune's kingdom
And the ink-black drink
Octopus bartenders
You can hear the mermaids sing
That'll teach you all to try and disobey
Here's a one-way ticket to your watery grave
And we say:

To all our enemies, we'll see you in hell
We're gonna walk 'em off the plank into the wishing well
Down to Davy Jones' Locker where the fishes sleep
I won't be praying for you so don't be praying for me
To all our enemies, we'll see you in hell
We're gonna walk 'em off the plank into the wishing well
Down to Davy Jones' Locker where the fishes sleep
I won't be praying for you so don't be praying
Don't be praying for me

Kill all those prisoners until their skin turns green
Let the salts of the ocean wash them skeleton clean
Raise up those oars and let them fall
As the wind steadily sings you can hear the crew call:

To all our enemies, we'll see you in hell
We're gonna walk 'em off the plank into the wishing well
Down to Davy Jones' Locker where the fishes sleep
I won't be praying for you so don't be praying for me
To all our enemies, we'll see you in hell
We're gonna walk 'em off the plank into the wishing well
Down to Davy Jones' Locker where the fishes sleep

I won't be praying for you so don't be praying
Don't be praying for me

Overall Meaning

The Devil Makes Three's song "The Plank" is nothing short of a raucous anthem to rebellion and vengeance on one's enemies. The song begins with the singer growing tired of a conversation and turns to a punishment he finds befitting of those who have betrayed or disagreed with him. It is a punishment he believes is best suited for their disobedience- the "plank". The plank is a common practice employed in pirate culture where a person is forced to walk a plank over the edge of the ship, leading to certain death in the open water. The singer emphasizes the punishment, saying that a person's destiny is predetermined, wishing upon them the fate of death by the mightier sharks of the sea.

The second verse speaks of a nautical underworld of sorts - Neptune's Kingdom - where even bartenders are octopuses and mermaids are heard singing in the background. It highlights the gruesome demise of the person as they are sent down to the locker of Davy Jones, so-called because it is the place where the drowned collect. The singer lets go of all morals and desires for forgiveness, wishing them a peaceful rest in the sleep of fishes. The last verse paints a picture of the crew rowing away from the sinking ship and bellowing their song to their enemies, comforting themselves for any thoughts of remembrance or prayer with the knowledge that their enemies will not remember them either.

I never knew I loved country music this much. I feel like it was made for me. Good lord it's so good.

@growl326

This is why country music gets a bad rep. This is to country as, Hank Williams Jr is to pop. Time to expand your vocab, Devils Makes Three winds up in Cabaret, Austin Americana, Dark Folk for me. Those obviously are all made up, like your categorization of country.

@growl326

I don't want to promote another band on this fantastic song. But I feel the urge to expand you're horizons since you think this is country. Check out Peculiar Pretzel Man and tell me it's country music too.

@HFRG-zq1qm

This is not country, this is bluegrass, and bluegrass is to country as dethklok is to springsteen.

@Danocaster89

@HFRG-zq1qm this isn't Bluegrass at all. Call it Americana, or even folk-punk, but it isn't bluegrass.

@angusfraser-brown1663

@@Danocaster89 HFRG-zq1qm It has roots in bluegrass along with blues, folk, country, jazz, old time, ragtime (collectively called americana) (taken directly from their page)

God, I remember the best show I've ever seen in my life. It was in Santa Cruz, at The Barn on High Street. The Devil Makes Three played after The Eligible Bachelors. Unbelievable! The place was packed and the sound was great. I will always remember that show.
