Farewell Mona Lisa
The Dillinger Escape Plan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wash your smile down
Yeah!
Wash it down the drain
Please!
Like it or not this is what fuel our obsessions (or insurgents?)
I'm always dreaming ? never stray far from the path.
But what am I supposed to say?
What am I supposed to say?
I'm sorry I guess I forgot
You think you can kill me again?
Guess I don't remember
What am I supposed to think?
What am I supposed to think?
What am I supposed to feel?
What am I supposed to feel?
There's no feeling in this place.
The echoes of the past speak louder than
Any voice I hear right now.
Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
There's no feeling in this place
There's no feeling in this place
Feeling in this place
What did you expect?
That we were nearly home, that we would never leave
What did you expect, that we would never leave home?
That we would never leave, that we would never leave
That we would never leave, that we would never leave
What did you expect from us, we're murderers
Murderers and liars and rapists and thieves
You should never put your trust in any of us
There is nothing to gain from this interference
Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
There's no feeling in this place
The past is louder than anything I hear right now
The past is louder than anything I hear right now
The lyrics to The Dillinger Escape Plan's song Farewell Mona Lisa are complex and open to interpretation. The song starts with the refrain "Wash it down the drain, down the drain," repeated with a sense of urgency. The singer is asking to wash something down the drain, potentially referring to a person's smile, but the meaning is unclear. The lyrics "Like it or not this is what fuels our obsessions/I'm always dreaming – never stray far from the path" suggest that the singer is driven by something, perhaps an obsession, and is always chasing his dreams.
The lines "Everything was taught to me/But what am I supposed to say?/What am I supposed to think?/What am I supposed to feel?" indicate a sense of confusion and uncertainty. The singer may be struggling to find his own voice, despite being taught everything he knows. The repeated line "There's no feeling in this place" further emphasizes the sense of emptiness and detachment. The chorus seems to be a warning against trying to exceed one's predetermined destiny, emphasizing that there is nothing worth fighting for and no feeling in this place. The final lines "What did you expect from us, we're murderers/Murderers and liars and rapists and thieves/You should never put your trust in any of us/There is nothing to gain from this interference" may suggest that the singer is addressing a specific person or group of people, warning them not to trust those who are capable of heinous acts.
Overall, the lyrics to Farewell Mona Lisa are dark and express a sense of disillusionment and detachment. The singer seems to be struggling to find meaning in a world that he perceives as empty and meaningless.

I first encountered this song during my high-school days, thanks to the Guitar Hero game on my friend's iPod. We played the game extensively, frequently opting for this particular song due to its outrageous difficulty; it was challenging AF. The track was not only difficult but also incredibly amusing, starting as complete gibberish. It's worth noting that, at the time, I was still learning English, being Russian myself.
The initial gibberish in the first part of the song then changes into a lyrical masterpiece in the second half. I distinctly heard the words "Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for or anything worth fighting for." This line resonated with me, and it marked a turning point in my life. Translating it into my own language, I pondered, "Why not strive to be more than I believe I should be? Why not attempt to become the best version of the person I am destined to be?" It really opened my eyes, i can say that much.
It was much later that I realised the song's theme centered around thieves and murderers, but the impact it had on me was profound. It spurred a personal transformation. Occasionally, even now, I revisit this song, like twice a year, as a reminder that I can become a better version of myself.
I share this comment as a tribute to the band that played a significant role in shaping who I am. Your song made a substantial impact on a random life, and for that, I am saying thank you. I genuinely believe I am a better person because of it. Thank you very much.
I wish more people would ask themselves the question ""Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for or anything worth fighting for."
