Power Turned Off
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alright, alright, alright! Hey! Hey! Hey, hey! Hey, hey! Hey! Come on! I tell ya, man, these cocksuckers... Now wait a minute, listen, if we don't quit early, they're gonna send off a letter to all the hall managers, all across America, saying The Doors are a bad... wait, now what time is it anyway?... I'm not leavin' 'til we get ourselves off, man, let's have some fun!... Yeah!... Hey! Hey, let's tell them we're not leavin' 'til we get some more power, man... The assholes are gonna win, man, if we don't do somethin' man... [crowd: WE WANT THE DOORS!] We don't have any electricity!...

Overall Meaning

The Doors' song Power Turned Off is an interesting commentary on the band's live performances and the struggles they faced with censorship and control by authorities. The song starts with an enthusiastic exclamation by frontman Jim Morrison, encouraging the audience to join in the rebellion. He then complains about the management and the censorship they face, which could lead to the band's blacklisting across America. He expresses the sentiment that they won't leave the stage unless they get the power back, as the management has turned off the electricity. Despite the obstacles, Morrison insists that they will not leave until they have had some fun and taken back control of their performance.

The lyrics seem to reflect the frustration that The Doors felt with the censorship they experienced, which was common at the time. Many songs were banned from radio play or live performances due to perceived indecency or political incorrectness. The idea that they were being held back or silenced by the authorities was a constant theme in their music. The chorus of the song, which contains the repeated refrain "we don't have any electricity," is a direct reference to their power being cut off, but it also has a broader significance, reflecting the feeling of being silenced or cut off from expression.

The Doors' Power Turned Off is an interesting glimpse into the band's live performances and the issues they faced with censorship and control. The lyrics reflect the rebellious spirit of the band, as they refuse to be silenced or controlled by the authorities. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of free expression and the challenges we face in fighting for it.

Just telling you what I saw, friend---of course I wished they played all night somehow. Do you hear those bangs between 3:00-5:00 here? That is Morrison when he unscrewed the mike stand from its base and smashed a hole in the middle of the stage, then started pretending to throw the stand out into the audience like a spear.
