Bleed
The Dreaming Lyrics

Tried to paint this perfect life
There's no ugliness, if we only close our eyes
But you cut too deep, too often
Now I'm hemorrhaging inside
It's too late to stitch up with a butterfly
You tear out my soul! You watch as I bleed!
Is this what you want? Is this what you need?
You tear out my soul! You watch as I bleed!
I swallow all my hate,
Keep it buried deep inside
But I'm choking on a truth that I can't deny
That you cut too deep, too often
And now I'm hemorrhaging inside
It'll take more than a tourniquet this time
Is this what you want? Is this what you need?
You tear out my soul! You watch as I bleed!
Is this what you want? Is this what you need?
You tear out my soul! You watch as I bleed!
But you cut too deep, too often
Now I'm hemorrhaging inside
It's too late to stitch up with a butterfly
Is this what you want? Is this what you need?
You tear out my soul! You watch as I bleed!
Is this what you want? Are you satisfied?
'Cause there's nothing left
You've bled me dry!... You've bled me dry!...
You've bled me dry!... (Now I'm hemorrhaging inside)
You've bled me dry!... I'm hemorrhaging inside
In "Bleed", The Dreaming explores how one person's actions can cause immense pain and damage to another. The opening lines speak to the human tendency to ignore the truth and instead hold onto an idealized version of reality, where everything is perfect and beautiful. However, the singer has been hurt so deeply and so often that they cannot ignore the pain anymore. This person has cut too deep, causing the singer to hemorrhage internally.
The chorus of the song asks pointed questions, questioning whether the pain caused by the other person is truly what they want and need. Interestingly, the language requires the other person to be implicated in the pain; the singer says "You tear out my soul!" as if the other person's actions are actively and intentionally causing harm. The lines "Is this what you want? Are you satisfied? 'Cause there's nothing left / You've bled me dry!" suggest that the other person has taken everything from the singer, leaving them with nothing.
The repeated refrain of "You've bled me dry!" drives home the message of the song, and the last line, where the singer admits they are hemorrhaging inside, really brings the message home. It's not just a physical wound, but a spiritual and emotional one that will take a long time to heal.
