At the Club
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, Friday night
Has finally come around
And me and my baby gonna
Head for a spot we found

We're gonna forget our cares
And dance on into the night
Down at the club (down at the club)
Whoa, everything is out of sight
Down at the club
We're gonna say that it's all right

For two bits and a dollar
They've got a swinging show for you
Whoa, yes, they do
And the band won't quit
Til everybody tell them to

And when they place that slow dance
You can hold your baby tight

Down at the club (down at the club)
Whoa, everything is out of sight
Down at the club
We're gonna say that it's all right

Hey, they've got lots of pretty
Dancing girls for the fellows
But, oh, you better watch out
In case your baby get jealous

Now some people might like to sit
And watch a picture show
But if that's what your plans are
Don't ask me to go

'Cause I'll be where the good times
Last til the early morning light

Down at the club (down at the club)
Whoa, everything is out of sight
Down at the club
They're gonna say that it's all right

It's all right (it's all right)
It's all right (it's all right)

It's all right (it's all right)
Let me tell you, it's all right

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song "At the Club" is a lively tune that captures the excitement of a Friday night out on the town with your significant other. The lyrics describe how the couple is eager to escape their worries and have a good time at a club where they can dance the night away. The song's upbeat melody creates a sense of joy and the phrase "everything is out of sight" suggests that nothing else matters besides the present moment of celebration. The reference to the "swingin' show" implies that the club offers live music, and the lyrics indicate that the band keeps playing until everyone is satisfied. The mention of a "slow dance" suggests that the couple also enjoys moments of tenderness amidst the hustle and bustle of the club. The song's overall message is that the club is a place to forget one's worries and enjoy the pleasures that life has to offer.

The Drifters' "At the Club" was released in 1964 and became a hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number 29 on the charts. The song was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who were a prolific songwriting partnership responsible for hits such as "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "A Teenager in Love". The song's lively melody and catchy refrain made it a popular choice for dancing, and it later became a staple of Northern Soul clubs in the UK. The Drifters were a popular vocal group in the 1950s and 1960s, known for their smooth harmonies and romantic ballads. The group went through several line-up changes over the years, but their signature sound remained consistent.

I love the Drifters. I grew up with their music in the 1960s in England.

I listen to Johnny every day all day and can't get enough of him , pity I'll never get to meet the , imho , greatest voice and most charismatic entertainer there ever was and probably ever will be . Does anyone know where he is buried ? I would love to visit the man's grave and I hope he knows he's still entertaining people to this day .
