Lost
The Drown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I lay here silent, how do I tell her
How far away I feel
With every breath she tries to hold tighter
But far away is all I feel

You needed a hand and I tried to be that hand
But life is yours to hold
Strap down tight, it's going to be a long ride
It's time you ride alone

Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see"
Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see"

"Don't leave me like this alone", she said
"I'd die to be with you
I took my own life, I took my own life
I took my own life with my own hands"

Listen to me, listen to me
Listen to me 'cause I can't save you
Listen to me, listen to me

Listen, I've got to save myself
I've got to save myself
I've got to save myself
I've got to save myself

Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see"
Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see
Put your nails in me"

She said she's never felt alive

Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see"
Then she said, "I found God
But I'm not the God you see
And I could never be"

Oh, I can't save anybody

No, I can't save you
Put your nails in me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Drown's song Lost reflect a complicated, emotive and dark relationship. The opening lines suggest that the singer is unable to express their feelings to the other person in the relationship, feeling distant and disconnected. The person who they are talking about appears to be trying to cling to them, but the singer feels as though they are further away from them than ever.

The second verse is a sad admission of failure: the singer tried to help, but ultimately couldn't do anything. Despite their initial promise, it seems as though they've lost control of their own life, and that if the other person is to get through whatever they are dealing with, they'll have to do it alone. When the other person says "I found God, but I'm not the God you see," it is unclear whether this is a literal or figurative statement. They could be speaking about a religious conversion or spiritual awakening, or it could be used metaphorically to describe their sense of identity shifting away from what the singer knows or understands.

The chilling final two verses describe the other person's plea for the singer not to abandon them, culminating in a startling admission of self-harm, where they have taken their own life. The singer implores them to listen to their words, but accepts that they cannot save them, saying "Listen, I've got to save myself."

The song's sombre tone is intensified by its use of powerful imagery, combined with the longing and despair in the vocals and instrumentation.
