The band's name derives from banjoist Leonard Podolak's earlier band Scruj MacDuhk (pronounced Scrugg MachDuke). MacDuhk was a warrior chieftain who fought with William Wallace, resisting English occupation of Scotland, during the reign of King Edward I. The entire name is a wordplay on the Disney character Scrooge McDuck created by Carl Barks.
In March of 2007 lead singer and budding songwriter Jessee Havey left the band to pursue other interests. Singer Sarah Dugas joined the band in July of 2007 and is on the road with The Duhks.
In late 2007, percussionist Scott Senior left the band to spend more time with his family, as his partner, Tara Beckta, was expecting their second child. Christian Dugas, Sarah's brother and a former bandmate of Leonard Podolak, has since joined The Duhks. Other members are fiddler Tania Elizabeth and guitarist Jordan McConnell.
In October 2007 The Duhks Sustainability Project http://www.greenduhks.com was launched to raise awareness about ways to live a more economically-viable and ecologically-sustainable lifestyle. In April 2008, The Duhks performed a post Earth Day benefit in Nederland, Colorado.
In spring 2016, the band announced that they would no longer be touring. They have not released any new music since 2014.

Repeat
Who's, gonna make up my dyin' bed? Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed?
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed, when I die?
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven, when I die?
Repeat
Who's gonna take my soul to Heaven? Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed?
Oh when I get that true Religion, Halleluj!
Repeat
Oh when I get that true religion, true religion will carry me through!
Oh when I get that true religion, Halleluj!
First verse repeat
The Duhks' "True Religion" is a soulful and introspective song that explores the common human fear and curiosity about what happens after we die. The song's repeated question, "Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed when I die?" seems to indicate a sense of abandonment or loneliness that comes with the thought of one's own death. The repetition of the question serves to emphasize the singer's concern and uncertainty about what happens after their physical body gives out. The second question, "Who's gonna take my soul to heaven when I die?" suggests a longing for comfort and reassurance in the idea of an afterlife.
As the song progresses, the lyrics seem to find solace in the concept of "true religion." The repeated phrase "Oh when I get that true religion, Halleluj!" suggests that the singer has found some peace of mind and a sense of purpose in their beliefs. The idea of "true religion" is left open to interpretation, but the song's message seems to suggest that it is something that provides a path to a better place beyond this life. The song's tone is not mournful, but rather reflective and accepting of life's uncertainties.
