I hear you, BUT it's the tactics used to obtain, "train", and continual control(or how they control) that are cruel without the Mahouth needing to be an aggressive or cruel person necessarily, AND being a Mahouth is usually passed down as "normal" within the culture so most do not see most of or any of it as cruelty. AND "money to obtain an elephant" 1) depends on how they obtain the elephant and 2) IF they could barely afford the elephant in the first place they shouldn't be getting the elephant anyway(IF that's the logic)...... they shouldn't be capturing and restraining and forcing work like they do anyway/either, especially when equipment could be obtained for heavy work, which would be the only reasonable excuse if it were an excuse as the only means to do a NEEDED job, but it's not!!!!

1st. They traumatize the elephant and it's family by taking it from it's mother and family.
2nd. They beat the elephant into submission...literally!!!!
3rd. They CHAIN the elephant's feet together...elephants have been permanently crippled by this practice and/or have needed at least a foot or from the knee down to be amputated. Those used for heavy labor suffer at least 3 times more than those used to parade around town.
4th. Those used to parade around town are forced to "live" in an enclosure barely big enough for them to turn around, with the only air circulation usually coming from above as the walls surrounding them are almost as tall as they are and usually solid. It's basically the same as an adult coming home from work and being put in the coat closet until morning arrives and the new day of work starts again, oh and, there is no day off work either.
5th. Most Mahouts who depend on tourists to feed the elephants are not providing nutritious or balanced meals
6th. IF they can barely afford to get the elephant, and barely afford to feed them, how are they going to be able to provide any needed medical care?
7th. The "tool" they use to direct and control the elephant is a large sharply pointed hook, they hook into the elephant's armpit and pull up very roughly, jabbing the elephant every time with that VERY sharp and WELL MAINTAINED point!!!
8th. Not only are their enclosures small with very little circulation, they are forced to roam on hot asphalt, concrete or very hardpacked dirt roads, which their feet and joints are not created for, surely causing at minimum discomfort if not various degrees of pain, if not also damage to bone structure and/or sores.
And the list goes on............

AND, YES, I mean this happens all over India and wherever the Asian elephants wander regularly, including the islands they are on. Also, Unless the laws have changed within the last three years or so, none of this is illegal, or considered animal cruelty or even discouraged or frowned upon by ANY laws and/or officials in these Asian countries!!!! IF you live in India and know there are laws now in existence or just perspective is starting to change then your information is more current than mine....However 1 - 8 still exist even IF the mahout isn't "beating" the elephant in front of anyone, and/or it goes reported or unreported those 8 details still mean there IS abuse!!!!!!!

I have only been near an elephant a few times in my 50 years, but I absolutely love them. The majority of the elephants shown in this video were Asian elephants. They are known for actually conforming to a master's will...but only because they are usually kidnapped from their mothers as young as possible and regardless of age subjected to major abuse to get them to conform and preform as the mahouts train them to do. Most if not all mahouts/drivers/ "owners" use at least one very cruel tool they make themselves for each elephant being "trained" It is a handheld tool which is like an extension of the mahout's arm with a curve/hook on it with a sharp point on the end. They hook this under the elephant's front leg into it's "pit" and kind of pull it up and jab the elephant inflicting pain to get it to cooperate and follow every command given. Depending on the era, the mahout and/or the age of the elephant, they can and do use chains, whips, ropes, large sticks/small tree limbs to control and inflict pain to gain control. It is really awful to see. Most are kept in areas only big enough for them to turn around in when they are not working out to the streets to take/make money. The areas are usually in city areas and right up against the family's house.
The majority of them do consider the mahout and family it's family and actually do love them, but mostly because they know nothing else. The ones used daily for logging purposes are usually mistreated, given only minimal needs to survive, worked from sun up to sun down and usually have chains keeping at least one set of feet shackled, which is done with no regard for the elephant and thus sores usually develop and go untreated. That's what I thought the one missing the foot was from. The videos showing babies in the water tubs while Mom was in background....most if not all of the adults have at least one leg chained and anchored preventing them form getting to the calf in that area and from getting to the humans.
Lyn there at the end does sing to the elephants she has in her care and loves them very much, and they love her and staff. She has a sanctuary where she does all she can to save as many elephants from being abused as she can.
The information I have shared I have seen in documentaries and videos. I think most if not all of it can be found on youtube now.
******BE WARNED*****
IF you search for video covering mahouts and/or training elephants in India and/or Asian nations, The treatment, the methods used by "mahouts" or any person seeking to USE an elephant are horrific and will trigger any compassionate person and any animal loving person.

At least in India, there is awareness of waywardly 'Mahouths' (controllers) cruelty towards their wards. There is a small minority of them. Often members of the Public report them to the Police, who do take action. Since an elephant is expensive to acquire and feed, these Mahouths are anxious to 'make some money' for themselves and for feeding their elephants. As always, there is money involved in this cruelty as well as big countries selling arms to tyrants and warlords who use them against unarmed civilians.

Thank you so much for explaining to others how terribly maltreated these beautiful animals are in some countries just for the pleasure of tourists wanting to "take a ride" on an elephant

The little, angry, baby elephant at 6:15 trying to attack is the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Before I die I hope to have cuddled with an elephant. What an amazing animal.
