Form… Read Full Bio ↴The Fiestas were an American R&B group from Newark, New Jersey.
Formed in 1958, The Fiestas signed to Old Town Records in 1959 after the label's owner, Hy Weiss, overheard the group singing in a bathroom adjacent to his office in Harlem. Their debut single was 1959's "So Fine"; the tune was a hit in the U.S., hitting #3 on the Black Singles chart and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. A series of soul singles followed from the group, among them "Last Night I Dreamed", "You Could Be My Girlfriend", "Anna", and "Think Smart", but only 1962's "Broken Heart" managed to chart, hitting #18 on the Black Singles chart.
Leaving Old Town, the group later recorded for Strand and Vigor, releasing music into the mid-1970s.

"Can you hear me?"
"Now can you hear me?"
It all got drowned out
Cut it out, cut me down.
You've been fuming at the mouth
I've been looking for an exit - and I think I've found one now.
Goddamn it, Jan
I'll never live up to your demands,
But I don't have to and I don't want to when you get this out of hand
Could you just do me a favor and forget what we began?
I'm getting out while I still can
These lyrics convey a situation where the singer feels overwhelmed and unheard. The first paragraph describes their struggle to communicate and emphasizes the fact that their attempts to be heard have been futile. The line "Lost in the sound" suggests that there is an abundance of noise or distractions that prevent the singer from getting their message across. They question whether the other person can hear them, emphasizing their frustration and desire for acknowledgment.
In the second paragraph, the singer tells the other person to stop criticizing or belittling them. The phrase "Cut it out, cut me down" implies that the other person has been speaking harshly or negatively towards them. The singer expresses their need for an escape from this situation, suggesting that they have finally found a way out. This implies that the toxicity of the relationship has become unbearable for the singer.
The third paragraph addresses a person named Jan directly. The singer acknowledges their inability to meet Jan's expectations, as depicted through the phrase "I'll never live up to your demands." However, they assert that they are not obliged to do so and do not want to comply with Jan's unreasonable behavior. The singer expresses their desire for Jan to let go of the relationship, pleading for them to "forget what we began." This shows the singer's determination to break free from the constraints of the relationship.
In the final paragraph, the singer concludes that they are leaving the situation while they still have the chance. The phrase "I'm getting out while I still can" expresses their urgency to escape the negativity and toxicity. They are choosing their own well-being over continuing a relationship that is detrimental to their happiness. By asserting their agency and decision to leave, the singer implies a sense of empowerment and liberation from a toxic situation.
