The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

Do Glowy
The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let's get together, yeah
Glow, glow, glow, glow
Glarey and glarey, yeah
Doin' it right, doin' it like you care
Under the tree where the spider got in your hair
I thought we should spend the night together
Dewy, dewy, dew
Let's get together, yeah
Drip, drip, drippy glow
Glowy and drippy, yeah
Dewing in it right, dewing it like you care
Runnin' all night through the flowers that eat us there
I thought we should spend the night together
I thought we should spend the night together
Glowy, glowy
Glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy glow
Glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy glow
Glowy, glowy
Glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy glow
Glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy, glowy glow
The lyrics of "Do Glowy" by The Flaming Lips are characterized by repetition and a dream-like, surreal quality. The song seems to emphasize the desire for unity, connection, and a shared experience of light and glow.
In the first verse, the word "glowy" is repeated as a call to bring people together. It suggests a shared sense of radiance and positive energy. The repetition of "glow" and "glarey" creates a sense of intensity and excitement, as if encouraging listeners to embrace the brightness around them. The line "Doin' it right, doin' it like you care" can be seen as a reminder to approach life and relationships with sincerity and passion. The image of a tree and a spider getting in someone's hair adds a whimsical touch, possibly representing unexpected and chaotic moments that can occur in even the most idyllic settings.
The second verse introduces the word "dewy," further emphasizing the theme of illumination and moisture. It suggests a sense of freshness and renewal. The repetition of "drip" and "drippy glow" creates a visual and sensory image, evoking the idea of something gently dripping or glowing. The line "Dewing in it right, dewing it like you care" echoes the sentiment from the first verse, urging listeners to engage fully and passionately in their experiences. The reference to running through flowers that "eat us there" adds a touch of surrealism and further enhances the dream-like quality of the lyrics.
The chorus repeats the word "glowy" multiple times, building upon the initial call for unity and shared connection. The repetition creates a sense of gathering momentum and intensity. It is as if the song is urging everyone to embrace the glow within and without, to fully immerse themselves in the experience of light and positivity. The repeated "glowy glow" can be interpreted as a celebration of a collective energy and an invitation to fully embrace the luminosity and joy around them.
Overall, "Do Glowy" conveys a message of unity, embracing the positive brightness of life, and approaching experiences with care and passion. The song's surreal and repetitive nature enhances its dream-like quality, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a shared sense of radiance and connection.
