The Flowers (1979-1980) were a Post-Punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland who recorded for Bob Last's FAST Product and Pop Aural record labels. They featured Hilary Morrison on vocals (also the wife of Bob Last) and drummer Simon Best, who was connected to Leeds Post-Punk pioneers The Mekons and Delta 5. They made their first recorded appearance on FAST Product compilation "Earcom 1" and that was then followed by two singles for Pop Aural. They were also featured on the American and Canadian versions of the FAST singles compilation "Mutant Pop". Unfortunately they never got around to recording a full-length album and presumedly broke-up around 1980/81. Singer Hilary Morrison was also featured singing backup vocals on two other Pop Aural singles, Restricted Code's "First Night On" (1980) and The Fire Engines' "Big Gold Dream" (1981).

When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
They tell me to leave you, leave you behind
They tell me to leave you, just get you out of my mind
They tell me to leave you, just leave you behind
Oh, forget all the good times that are making me blind
I know you run around and you'll never settle down
But when you hold me, baby, in your lovin' arms
I could love you forever, baby, but
When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
They tell me to leave you, leave you behind
They tell me to leave you, just get you out of my mind
They tell me to leave you, just leave you behind
Oh, forget all the good times that are making me blind
That are making me blind
The Flowers' song After Dark tells the story of a love torn by a decision that needs to be made. Through the lyrics, the singer speaks to the flowers in their backyard, asking for guidance and seeking comfort in their presence. The flowers, personified as wise mentors, advise the singer to leave their beloved partner behind and forget the good times that are keeping them blinded by their love. The singer acknowledges their partner's inability to settle down and the need to quit while they are still ahead. However, the love between them is too strong, and when they are held in their partner's arms, they feel they could love them forever. The song shows the inner turmoil of a person who is caught between their heart and their rationale.

When I speak to the flowers in my backyard
When I contemplate my thoughts in isolation
They tell me to leave you, leave you behind
My conscience urges me to move on without you
They tell me to leave you, just get you out of my mind
My inner voice advises me to forget about you
They tell me to leave you, just leave you behind
My intuition suggests to let you go completely
Oh, forget all the good times that are making me blind
Moments of joy with you are clouding my judgment
I know you run around and you'll never settle down
I realize that you are not the type to commit
And I should quit while I'm still on top
I should give up before getting hurt more
But when you hold me, baby, in your lovin' arms
Despite everything, your embrace makes me feel safe
I could love you forever, baby, but
Although I want to love you always, there are doubts
That are making me blind
Feelings of love are causing me to lose sight of reason

“[life] after dark”
“Slipped into my bluejeans / Put on my casual jacket / Glossed my lips with cola flavour / My mind with media power / While dancing at the disco / With my handbag at my feet / I met a boy called Jerry / Whose dancing was a treat //
Slipped into my bluejeans / Put on my casual jacket / Glossed my lips with cola flavour / My mind with media power / While dancing at the disco / With my handbag at my feet / I met a boy called Jerry / Whose dancing was a treat / I fed him Vesta cookies / With a little Hirondelle / We munched on Mr Kiplings / Which I knew would make him tell / He said he really liked me / And did I take the pill / I sprayed myself with Charlie / And got ready for the kill //
Slipped into my bluejeans / Put on my casual jacket / Glossed my lips with cola flavour / My mind with media power / While dancing at the disco / With my handbag at my feet / I met a boy called Jerry / Whose dancing was a treat / I fed him Vesta cookies / With a little Hirondelle / We munched on Mr Kiplings / Which I knew would make him tell / He said he really liked me / And did I take the pill / I sprayed myself with Charlie / And got ready for the kill / He fumbled through my bra strap / While I prayed for whispered nothings / He was working on his technique / While I tried to be a vamp / He tried to be a playboy / And I tried to be a playgirl / But he couldn’t stay hard no / Couldn’t stay hard no… so… put… ABBA… on… instead!!!”
