The Flying Machine is best known for its major hit single in 1969, "Smile A Little Smile For Me", which peaked at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart (on Kapp Records' Congress record label) Their first record which was self titled was released by Janus Records in 1969. By 12 December that year they had sold a million copies of the record, and it was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. [1] The song was penned by the songwriting pairing of Tony Macaulay and Geoff Stephens. Despite originating from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, the record had no presence at all on the UK Singles Chart, despite its initial release there on Pye Records.
A follow-up single, a cover version of "Baby Make It Soon", first recorded by Marmalade, achieved the U.S. Hot 100 the following year, but the group reportedly grew frustrated with their pop-oriented style. A final single, "The Devil Has Possession Of Your Mind", suggested a change of direction, but the Flying Machine split up following its release.
Bassist Colman went on to a successful career as a session musician, record producer and BBC Radio disc jockey.

That Same Old Feeling

Tearing at this heart of mine
Telling me that maybe I'm
Not really over you
I still get that same old yearning
Turning my heart inside out
Now there can't be any doubt
The oak tree where I carved your name
A year ago now
Somehow it doesn't look the same
I think it knows now
The places we would go
Still play sad songs we used to know-oh
I still get that same old feeling
Tearing at this heart of mine
Telling me that maybe I'm
Not really over you
I still get that same old yearning
Turning my heart inside out
Now there can't be any doubt
I'm still not over you
The cottage where we used to play
Is overgrown now
We dreamed that we'd live there someday
Just on our own now
Those letters you wrote me
Still bring back sad old memories
I still get that same old feeling
Tearing at this heart of mine
Telling me that maybe I'm
Not really over you
I still get that same old yearning
Turning my heart inside out
Now there can't be any doubt
I'm still not over you
The Flying Machine's song "That Same Old Feeling" is a song about heartbreak and holding on to the past. The song is about a person who is still in love with their ex and cannot seem to move on. The lyrics express the pain and longing that the person feels, as they are reminded of their past love when they see places and things that bring back memories. The chorus repeats the same lines twice, making the message clear that despite time passing, the feeling remains unchanged.
The verse about the oak tree where the couple had carved their names gives the impression that nature can sense love and loss. The place where they had made memories has aged and become something different, highlighting the idea that time moves faster than we think, and we must learn to let go. The cottage where they used to play is now overgrown, and the letters from the past are the only thing that remains, further emphasizing the sense of loss.
Overall, the song "That Same Old Feeling" by The Flying Machine is a poignant ballad about heartbreak and the difficulty of moving on. It captures the feeling of being stuck in the past and the pain of remembering what was lost.
