Juliet
The Four Pennies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a love, I knew before
She broke my heart, left me unsure
Juliet, don't forget
The promise you made, I need never be afraid
Things you do, reminiscent of you
Juliet, when we, when we met
You gave me, sweet memories
Things you do reminiscent of you
There was a love I knew before
She broke my heart, left me unsure
Juliet, don't you, oh don't you let
My love go astray, in this way
Julie , Julie, Julie, oh Julie

Oh my Juliet, Julie oh Julie
Oh my Juliet...fades...

Overall Meaning

The Four Pennies' "Juliet" is a classic love song that tells the tale of a heartbroken man who is unsure whether he can trust again after his previous love left him brokenhearted. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they effectively convey the emotions of heartbreak and longing. The singer asks Juliet not to forget the promise she made him, and he tells her that the things she does are reminiscent of his past love. He also tells her that she gave him sweet memories when they met.

The repetition of Juliet's name reflects the singer's obsession with his new love, and also highlights the contrast between his past heartbreak and his current infatuation. The chorus, which repeats the names Julie and Juliet, is memorable and catchy, and adds to the song's romantic tone. The singer's desperate plea for Juliet to not let his love go astray conveys the ultimate message of the song: that love can be fragile and easily broken, but it is worth fighting for.

When I first heard this as young child I wanted to learn to play guitar! That superb intro is awesome! My late parents got me guitar lessons and I became that guitarist - Thank you mum and dad and th Four Pennies.

One of my 60's favourites. My mother loved it also. It was so different to everything at the time. Pity it was so short.

I was there on their farewell tour and the starlight club was one of the places they played. Another venue that same week was down Burnley. The drummer Alan Buck refused to join them, so I was invited to play drums, but got just beaten to the post by another drummer. I was invited to cruise around to their final gigs with them.
