Visually, they use classic psych imagery such as colourful artwork and magic mushrooms in combination with occult symbols and occasional nods to the Nazisploitation movies of the 70s (a tribute to old school B-movies & cult flicks), while their lyrics focus on occultism & psychedelic experiences.

The Gates are an Alternative Rock/Experimental Rock group based in Cedar Rapids, IA. They formed in 2008 by guitarist/vocalist Erik Tarr under the name Acquiesce. Trent Hoffmann was convinced to buy a bass and join the band while Erik taught him how to play it. The band's name was changed to The Gates in 2009. John Kirchner joined the band as a drummer in late 2009. In early 2011, they released their first album "Sound", after starting to record the album in late 2010. They play locally and are always looking for more venues.

The Gates are also a Japanese thrash rock group that formed in 1999. Japanese doom master Church of Misery bassist Tatsu Mikami and previous Church of Misery singer Yoshiaki Negishi formed this band with Tokyo crust/hardcore veteran Masayasu Futatsugi. This band is just for fun, but their material got really highly valued by the underground. Their limited split with Metal Skull sold out all 500 copies in two weeks. After that release they put out their debut cd Total Death. In 2006 they put out a split '7 ep with Japanese d-beat masters Disclose.

The Gates are also a New Wave/Brit Rock group out of Bayonne, NJ that formed in 2007. They cinematic sound-scapes, effortlessly blending New Wave with Rock. While sharing styles with acts such as the Decemberists, the Pixies, and the Smiths, the Gates retain dynamic direction which underly their individual style. Led by Anthony Silva on vocals, and guitarist Bill Wood; spurring harmonies and melodies in an unpredictable fashion, while John Willoughby on bass, and drummer Steve LaMarca charge ahead with the groove; lighting up the back end. It wasn’t long until the band released their self titled EP in 2008, followed by the 2009 release of “Growing Up.” As The Gates gear up for their third release, they continuously perform in the Tri-State Area.

@ThorrAxeofficial Actually i still use that sound today, just as a "secondary tone" for blending. (2 channels left 2 right, one is the hm2 and the other is a normal tighter sound and same on the other side works perfectly for melodeath stuff imo if you don't overdo the hm2 part)

You’re right, I jam through any amp that is convenient at where I’m at, no complaints or excuses, just be grateful you can enjoy music with other musicians. God forbid it’s not a Bogner or Diezel that costs more than my Jeep.

Line 6 is decent, the Flextone II amps were pretty good, I owned them back in the day along with Boogies and Knuckleheads as well. I own a Line 6 Amplifi 150 for a practice amp and for fun, just depends on how you dial them in. Boss Katana amps are probably the best bang for your buck to be honest. So many options, at the end of the day it’s all apples and oranges.

Ola, try to put the Enhancer block after the cab otherwise it gets "monoized", expecially going into a mono poweramp.
You probably wouldn't want that 'cause it could create some phase issues.

The Enhancer works best going stereo out directly to the PA system.

50 minutes of setting a sound only to play with a full band and have to start over is normally what happens. That final tone though, just pure metal nastiness, I love it. I've been watching these videos for a while and for some reason never put two and two together until this time around speaking about At the Gates and The Haunted, realizing whom I've been watching (I am a bass player after all). Of course this is going to turn out a badass tone.

Ola! Discovered you channel a few days ago, been watching a lot of videos since then. Cool stuff! Been a metalhead since the early 90s myself. The Six Feet Under album with you on it is the best one since the first one and better than any since. I am going to check out Feared, must admit I haven't heard any of it before. I've never been impressed with any presets I've gotten from Axe Exchange. I think it's because theres too many variables that come into play when making presets. The guitar and pickups used are different than mine, the players finger tone, the speakers or cab they made it with, etc. I've always had better results making my own. I want to see what they thought of this preset! haha

Ola Englund, you make amazing videos, thank you, I have a shit ton of questions, some that could turn into tutorial videos and others that are probably just for me specifically but lets start with this,
When you are making a video for us, lets say like the the At The Gates AX8 tone dialing video, what's signal chain of the audio we are hearing? Specifically the two elements, your voice and the the guitar sound? I know you tell us what mic you are using in front the cab when using it, but to get such clarity from both you guitar sound and your voice without an obvious mic for your voice present in the video makes me ask this question being such a novice to this world of home studio recording. I only have a Boss BR-800 as my interface using garage band, but my guitar gear is of high quality, EVH 5150 III, Mesa Boogie Roadster, Randall XL cab with V30's, Dime Slime Bumble Bee Razorback with a seymour duncan blackout preamp in it, Jackson Kelly, Jackson flying V, Schecter Hellraiser, ESP eclipse, and an Ibanez RG, using either Audix I5 mic, or a Shure 57, or both in front of the cab. Does it really just come down to having a good interface with good mic preamps, like the apollo twin? Are you post processing the audio of the guitar in the audio of the video? I could go on, because I'm literally trying to learn how do this by myself but get frustrated and unfortunately impatient with some of the geeky videos I've found.

Hi Ola! I'm planning on getting the Ax8 after owning an Ultra for years. I'm not sure if I understood this correctly: was this whole thing ONE preset? I understand that you can make these scenes, but you can set up one scene with two different amps/cabs? Does this mean that when I switch between scenes I get the delay/reverb tail like in the Headrush pedal? What's the real difference between changing scenes vs. changing presets?

Changing scenes (is not changing a preset) is usually based around one amp (or two in your Y block) I have my scenes setup so Scene 1 is Rhythm S2 is Rhythm and phaser, S3 is with delay ect. You can load an other amp in the Y block. But if it's another amp it still does a little lagg thingy (at least in my ax8) Maybe i'm doing it wrong :)

I always though the Diezel models in the AX8 sounded weird and... pretty much bad.. Palm mutes sound like the tonal embodiment of wet wool. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that.

That Das Metall amp sim is a Diezel VH4. Great sim, better than the real amp. And Sithu Aye uses it, so you know it's good.

Still watching so disregard If you covered this. Can you make a video on setting line levels for the AX8 unit? I’m trying to hook min up with my JCM800 and it’s kind of a mess. I can figure out how to make the unit transparent on the EQ and everything gets super compressed. A tutorial on setting the unit to the amp would be great!

Do the majority of metal heads know that at the gates album was recorded on a solid state peavey amp (I believe, memory could have mixed up info) the point is they managed to get good enough tone from a cheap amp. Eq is key!

Hola Señor Ola, I was wondering why you're using a M160 instead of a SM57. I'm not a recording expert or a mic guru whatsoever, but my understanding is that SM57 is a more common choice? Just curious, the sound you get out of the M160 is killer anyway, so whatever.

i'll say you'll dial better if you tuned to B Standard....once you change tunings...tone is different because frequencies change...i realized that redialing my Boss Katana, and i still can't get my tone with the Katana 100 1x12...
