Begin The Beguine
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender
It brings back a night of tropical splendor
It brings back a memory ever green

I'm with you once more under the stars
And down by the shore an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine

To live it again is past all endeavor
Except when that tune clutches my heart
And there we are, swearing to love forever
And promising never, never to part

What moments divine, what rapture serene
Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted
I know but too well what they mean

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, please make them play
Till the stars that were there before return above you
Till you whisper to me once more, "Darling, I love you"
Then we suddenly know what heaven we're in
When they begin the, begin the, begin the beguine

When they begin the, begin the, begin the beguine
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song "Begin The Beguine" is about the power of music to evoke memories of a past love. The lyrics reflect on the feelings and sensations that are brought back when the beguine rhythm begins to play. The beguine is a dance originally from the French Caribbean, and the lyrics describe a night of tropical splendor, under the stars and by the shore. The palms are swaying and the orchestra is playing, transporting the singer back to a moment of divine, serene rapture when they were with their love, swearing to love forever and promising never to part.

However, the memories are tinged with sadness, as the singer knows all too well what it means when people curse the chance that was wasted. They urge the music not to start again, to let the love that was once a fire remain an ember, and to let the dead desire sleep. But the final lines suggest that the power of the beguine rhythm is too strong to resist, and the singer and their love are transported to heaven once more when the music begins.

Overall, the song beautifully captures the nostalgia and bittersweet memories of a lost love, and the powerful evocative quality of music.

When my father was dying back in the 80's he asked me to play this at his funeral. We didn't have the record and nobody else we knew had it. We lived in a small village with 1 record store that didn't have it either. So we had to play another piece of music. Every time I listen to this I think of my father and see him in my minds eye as a young man dancing with my mother and I can't stop crying.

Same here, I just remember my father and my mother dancing with this music, and I see them in my mind and I cry and cry. I'm sending a big hug body.

My Father started listening to Glenn Miller music in 1959 when I was 6 years old. He would turn up the volume on the stereo and the music flowed throughout every room in the house. It was so beautiful to listen to. My Father was always in a great mood when he listened to Glenn Miller music. By the time I was 17 I knew the words to most of the Glenn Miller songs. I was blessed to have inherited his wonderful Glenn Miller collection. His music fills my heart with joy and brings back beautiful memories.
