Blue Orchids
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed of two blue orchids
Two beautiful blue orchids
One night while in my lonely room
I dreamed of two blue orchids
So full of love and light
That I wanted to possess each tender bloom
Then my dream took wings
And through a thousand springs
Blue orchids seemed in a world apart
But when I met you
Something pale and blue
Came stealing from the meadows of my heart
I saw my two blue orchids
My beautiful blue orchids
Last night and what a sweet surprise
When you looked at me

It was plain to see
Blue orchids only bloom in your eyes

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song Blue Orchids is a beautiful love song about the singer's dream of two blue orchids that he desires to possess. The song's melody starts off soft and gentle, but picks up pace as the dream takes hold, and the lyrics become more vivid. The singer's heart is filled with love and light, and he feels a strong pull towards the "tender blooms" of the two blue orchids. However, the dream eventually takes flight in his mind, and he sees the blue orchids growing in a faraway, distant world that seems out of reach.

However, the dream takes a turn when the singer meets someone special - someone who brings a "pale and blue" light into his heart. Suddenly, he realizes that his dream is not so far-fetched after all. In fact, blue orchids only bloom in this person's eyes, and the singer is overjoyed by this sweet surprise. The song beautifully captures the feeling of falling in love and realizing that the person you desire is right in front of you.

Overall, Blue Orchids is a lovely song that beautifully encapsulates the feeling of love and the joy of falling for someone special. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but the melody and the Glenn Miller Orchestra's signature sound elevate it to a classic love song that still resonates with listeners today.

My God, what beautiful lyrics. Itโ€™s one of those songs that sticks with you. My great-grandmother used to have a vase with two faux blue orchids displayed prominently in her living room. Now I know why.

If you haven't heard Tommy Dorsey's version with Jack Leonard's vocal,I urge you to do so. This one's great, but TD's is a cut above, imo.

@@swingman5635 Vocally for sure imo the TD version wins out between this one here and that one anyway. The arrangement and performance of this GM one, instrumentally, is wonderful in its own right... love that sax section and tenor sax solo, and the muted brass section (and I am not that big of a GM band fan)! Of course TD's lengthy solo intro on his version is gorgeous!
