How
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
There is no moon above
When love is far away too
Till it comes true
That you love me as I love you

Somewhere there's music
How near, how far
Somewhere there's heaven
It's where you are
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon
Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon

Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song "How High the Moon" is a romantic ballad that speaks about the power and distance of love. The first verse suggests that music is playing somewhere and the tune is faint, just as love may be present in someone's life but not fully realized. The second verse reinforces this message by saying that heaven is also present, but it seems far away.

The chorus repeats the sentiment that love makes everything brighter and allows for realization of both music and heaven. The absence of love is highlighted as a dark and still place, which suggests that love has the ability to brighten and bring movement to one's life. The song ends on a hopeful note, suggesting that the darkness will be lifted once love is reciprocated.

Overall, "How High the Moon" is a sweet and romantic song that speaks to the human experience of longing for love and the brightness it brings.

My son had a swing band at his wedding 13 years ago. My wife and I took swing dance lessons and didn't tell anyone. They the band opened with this song. It was awesome as we caught everyone by surprise. My nephew travels the world as a swing and Lindy hop dancer sure had a good time too. What a great song to move too.
